Toshiba tried to offer a unique hybrid laptop experience with the Satellite U925t but it just has a few too many small faults or just doesn't quite compare for price and features against most of the other hybrids available. About the best thing going for it is the fast boot times and data loads from its solid state drive. Beyond this, it has less resolution, lower running times, more noise and a keyboard and trackpad that just aren't as good as its competition.

If this were a $700 device, it’d be easy to recommend the Satellite U925t as a tagalong Windows 8 tablet. But given its limitations in both slate and keyboard mode, it’s a tough sell at a price that puts it at the high end of hybrids.

Toshiba's U920T sliding-screen hybrid Ultrabook is a neat concept that takes some getting used to. It's a hybrid that's fun to use as a tablet and it works equally well as a notebook. However, we're not sure how well the screen's mechanism will last over time. The unit has good connectivity features, but it's missing a Full HD screen resolution and dual-band Wi-Fi.

Toshiba has taken the hybrid Ultrabook concept and put it on the rails. Its Satellite U920T (PSUL1A-00S001) is a 12.5in, Windows 8 model with a screen that slides over its keyboard base. You can use it as a tablet or as a laptop, but it's designed primarily with the tablet form factor in mind, and the screen is always exposed in an out-facing position to reinforce this usage model. As such, the U920T is one of the first hybrids we've seen to move away from the folding clamshell design.

You can't see our New York City office right now, but it's something of a laptop menagerie. If Toshiba got one thing right with its first Windows 8 flagship, it's this: there is indeed a market for PCs that can be used as tablets. It's convenient to tuck your Ultrabook's keyboard away when the moment strikes, and turn it into a slate (a big, heavy slate, but a slate nonetheless).

With the release of Windows 8 only a day away, there are many new computers coming to market including the Toshiba Satellite U925t. While it may look like a laptop, it's also a tablet because the keyboard slides under the 12.5-inch touch screen. You also get a speedy solid-state hard drive and very fast boot times.

At first glance, slider-style Windows 8 convertibles will remind you of smartphones with slide-out keyboards, a style rarely seen anymore. The mechanical elements of the Toshiba Satellite U925t convertible laptop are complex, but well-made. It won't be your main machine, but it's one of the more usable Windows 8 launch experiments.

Like the Sony VAIO Duo 11, the Toshiba Satellite U925t tries to marry a tablet and a notebook into one device, but it's not the most elegant solution. While we like that we can adjust the angle of the display, the sliding motion itself feels awkward. Furthermore, at $1,149, we expect a higher resolution screen, as with the U925t's competitors. The battery life is also short for an Ultrabook.

Toshiba’s Satellite U920T is the latest Windows 8 hybrid device designed to attract business users who want the full legacy experience, not just a cutdown mobile OS.The Toshiba Satellite U920T isn’t the best hybrid device out there. It does offer more functionality than the Surface RT, but is simply too heavy to be used a tablet as you cannot undock the keyboard.

The Toshiba Satellite U920T is a very likable convertible Ultrabook, although it took me a while to realise why. The reason, I'd say, is that it doesn't come across as some toy-like novelty item – it errs more on the sensible side. Even so, I still want to tilt the screen forward at times and its fold flat and slide convertible mechanism must be obeyed, which can be a little bothersome for speedy getaways. Still, this Ultrabook feels reassuringly solid and has a battery life that should get you through the day. Some will bemoan the lack of a full HD screen though, which leads to the biggest worry: the price. It's something that dogs all convertible Ultrabooks and the state of the premium portable PC market.

The Toshiba Satellite U920T has good processing power, good responsiveness and a good touchscreen to make up for the small touchpad. But it's just too heavy to use as a tablet. If you're not in it for the touchscreen, then we recommend the Portégé Z930, which has better processor power and more connectivity... And it costs less.

The Toshiba Satellite U920t is a well-built and reasonably attractive convertible laptop/tablet with smooth and assured sliding action, although it’s rather awkward to open compared to other sliders. It offers decent connectivity, an average typing experience, good enough performance, and surprisingly impressive speakers. To keep the Toshiba Satellite U920t price lower than most rivals, Toshiba has been forced to cut a few corners: the screen resolution is not Full HD, it ‘only’ offers five-point touch, and there’s no pressure-sensitive stylus support. However, better battery life than most non-Atom hybrids we’ve tested means it’s still an attractive option.

Slash £200/$300 from the price and the Toshiba Satellite U920t is one of the best value hybrids on the market. Add a better screen and refine the mechanism and it's one of the best quality. But as it stands, the Toshiba Satellite U920t under delivers in both categories.

It’s too heavy and cumbersome to function well as a tablet, and although general build, usability and performance are all perfectly acceptable, the screen quality and battery life simply aren’t good enough for a machine costing the best part of £1,000. If you’re absolutely desperate to buy a Windows 8 hybrid right now, we’d go for the VAIO: it has a superior screen and a more attractive design, is much lighter and has longer battery life – plus, if the price is too high, you can always opt for a cheaper configuration. Our advice, though, is to hold onto your cash until something more compelling arrives. Either that or buy a proper laptop or tablet instead.

The Satellite U920T is the first attempt from Toshiba at creating a Windows 8 hybrid device. The Toshiba Satellite U920T has a unique way of transforming from a tablet into a laptop. Sadly, it's not a very nice one and together with the low resolution screen and only moderate performance, it doesn't do much to justify the price tag.

As Toshiba’s only initial offering in the Windows 8 tablet/convertible laptop market, the Satellite U920t has a lot riding on it. It’s a well-built and attractive device with smooth and assured sliding action, and offers decent connectivity. To keep its price lower than most rivals a few corners have been cut: the screen resolution is not Full HD, it ‘only’ offers five-point touch, and there’s no pressure-sensitive stylus support. However, the U920t gives you good specifications and connectivity, and its affordability is a major plus. We look forward to giving you our final verdict in the full review.

Toshiba Satellite U920t-100
Toshiba Satellite U920T-100 is arguably a Windows 8 device that has one of the most unique designs when compared to other Windows 8 devices. Rather than designed with a screen that can rotate up to 360 degrees, this convertible laptop has special rails instead. Featuring a 12.5-inch touchscreen display with solid black color throughout its body, it looks really simple since it is designed for those who want simplicity and to eliminate the need of a laptop and a tablet separately. Besides, it can run many desktop applications like Microsoft Office, Skype and Photoshop in tablet mode which is an added value. Powered by a super-fast Intel Core i5 processor with 4 GB RAM, it is good enough to perform tasks such as browsing and playing simple games. Thus, it delivers good application performance in Windows 8 - thanks to its specs and touchscreen display which maximize the Windows 8 experience.
However, it weighs 1.5 kg which isn’t optimal to be used as a tablet. Unsurprisingly, it’s far heavier than the iPad and other Android tablets. In laptop mode, the keyboard and touchpad are small compared to other similarly big laptops, which is due to the slider design. Despite carrying a laptop-tablet hybrid concept, the screen resolution of only 1,366 x 768 pixels is a tad disappointing. The low resolution display isn’t the best for multimedia experience such as watching movies and videos. Overall, it’s a good performing laptop with a unique design. Nevertheless, the Toshiba Satellite U920t-100 is still something to consider if you’re looking for a versatile, convertible Windows 8 laptop.

Ultra-Hybrid. Toshiba presents quite a few interesting Ultrabooks to the world. Our latest test model is a fusion of a tablet and Ultrabook. It employs a 12.5-inch touchscreen and a power-saving Intel Core i5-3317U processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 IGP. The Hybrid model looks great but what does it have to offer on the hardware side?

Hybrids are perhaps not as popular as one might think. The best-of-all-worlds selling point has been hammered somewhat by consumers' reception of Windows 8. But if v8.1 of Microsoft's OS catches on, hybrids could still see more of the market. Just not worth the money, considering it doesn’t deliver as a tablet.

Toshiba’s take on the convertible tablet/ultrabook uses a very similar sliding mechanism to Sony’s Duo 11, with the screen sliding upwards and then away from the keyboard. Toshiba has packed in a few added extras that help to justify the slightly higher price here, namely a large SSD and GPS. Combined with a decent screen and excellent hinge, the U920t is a rather compelling convertible.

With the arrival of Windows 8, we have also seen the arrival of more hybrid-style laptops—portables that can take advantage of Windows 8's touch capabilities without sacrificing the productivity enabled by the traditional clamshell-style laptop with built-in keyboard. For everyone else, the Satellite is a study in compromises. For the price, you could buy a thinner, lighter laptop with a similarly sized display. But with the U925T, you'll get the flexibility of switching to the tablet and touch input when it suits your style.

The overall design of this laptop shows a lot of promise. The hinge design seems like a really good idea. The low quality screen and the placement of the fans make it impossible to enjoy the machine in the positions that the hinge seems to suggest you would use it, so it’s hard to tell. Toshiba is currently selling this ultrabook hybrid for $1149, which is $150 more than the Surface Pro.

Although it has all the ingredients for a good ultrabook or tablet, like an agile processor, svelte chassis, and attractive screen, the Toshiba Satellite U925T-S2120 misses the mark by trying to be both. The end result is a so-so ultrabook and a bulky tablet that converge through an awkward sliding hinge mechanism.

By trying to be both, though, it ultimately misses the mark. Instead, the end products are a so-so ultrabook and a bulky tablet that converge through an awkwardly implemented sliding hinge mechanism. If you're absolutely set on getting a hybrid ultrabook, stick with the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 for its intuitive convertible design. Otherwise, the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T remains the ultrabook to beat.
