The successor. The new version of the Satellite S70 doesn't rely on a GeForce GT 740M chip anymore, but on a Radeon R9 M265X graphics core which enhances gaming performance significantly. The notebook still has a Core-i7 processor, a Full HD display and a Blu-ray burner. Does Toshiba offer a successful all-rounder?

The Satellite S70 is one of Toshiba's top-of-the-range 17" multimedia laptops. It's a range that boasts an aluminium shell and a powerful configuration. The Toshiba Satellite S70 provides a satisfactory experience and nothing more. It performs well enough for anything except games, but its pitiful screen closes a lot of other doors (photo editing, video editing, use in bright light...).

The Toshiba Satellite S70 provides strong all-round performance and will make a good desktop-replacement system for both home and office use. However, the screen is below par for a laptop in this price range, and that's an obvious weakness in a laptop that is clearly designed for entertainment. That leaves it looking over-priced at £1199, so if it still interests you it's worth shopping around to see if you can find it at a better price online rather than buying from Toshiba directly.

Despite this, the Satellite S70-B is a disappointment. It doesn't look or feel like a £1,199 laptop, and the display is well below par. That's by no means the end of the Toshiba's troubles, however, as it also faces stiff competition: the Gigabyte P34G v2 squeezes a superior all-round performance into a portable 14in chassis, while the 17.3in MSI Apache Pro GE70 2PE easily beats the Toshiba at its own game. Unless the Toshiba Satellite S70-B's price takes a dramatic tumble in the coming months, this is one desktop replacement we'd take care to avoid.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
