Toshiba Satellite P70-A-104
Toshiba have crafted the perfect machine for entertainment. The Toshiba Satellite P70-A-104 is a 17 inch behemoth, with a brilliant 1920 x 1080 glossy LCD display. The display can be a little bit darker than one might like, but overall it is gorgeous and this flaw is easy to overlook. It is perfect for a desktop replacement/home entertainment center. 3 kg weight and a short battery life make it less than ideal for portable use. It is a stretch to get over 3 hours of moderate use on one charge, but that is to be expected with a machine this powerful. With the 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-4700MQ 4th generation Haswell processor and discrete nVidia GeForce GT 745M graphics, it is powerful enough to play the highest resolution video you can find, and run the most demanding games at above medium settings. Equipped with Harmon Kardon quad-speakers, bass a little weak, but the audio quality is extremely decent and the volume is surprising.
The Toshiba Satellite P70-A-104 runs Windows 8, which is one of the best options out there for an entertainment-centric machine. For Blu-ray enthusiasts, the Blu-ray drive will be a delight. Four USB 3.0 ports provide faster data transfer. The build quality is perhaps one of the biggest letdowns. The nondescript brushed aluminum body will flex and creak at points, and the seals along the side of the machine are less than attractive. To sum it all up, this is a great media machine with plenty of power at a decent price.

Premium Haswell. Full HD screen, Core i7 Haswell, GeForce GPU, Harman/Kardon sound system - appetizing. Can the Premium DTR deliver what it promises? Find out in the following review.

The Toshiba doesn't win any prizes for style or longevity: its design is a mix between classy aluminium and cheap-looking plastic, and battery life results were poor. Instead, this machine has a potent processor, a versatile specification and a high-quality screen and speakers. It's not cheap, but it's worth the investment if you prize power and practicality over the charms of lightweight, low-power Ultrabooks.

The Satellite P70 doesn't win awards for its build quality, visual design or longevity, but it excels in several other categories: the screen is excellent, the speakers are acceptable for a media machine, and there's plenty of power inside – so this system has the quality to handle media, gaming and work. It's worth considering if Ultrabooks and other 15.6in laptops just aren't powerful or versatile enough.

All-rounder with weaknesses. Toshiba's 17.3-inch all-rounder is available for just under 1200 Euros (~$1346). The buyer gets a very well equipped computer with weaknesses: For example, the Satellite does not feature an IPS display.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4700MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

2.9 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.4 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
