Priced just under $500, the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5096 is more physically attractive than it is an outstanding performer, but if you don't need to do anything too taxing there's nothing wrong with this sleek-looking laptop.

The 15.6-inch Satellite L650 is part of Toshiba's 'everyday computing' range. In other words, it's a jack of all trades that should appeal to just about everybody. Our review model, the Satellite L650-12Q, uses an Intel Core i5-430M CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 GPU. It costs a quite reasonable £550 or thereabouts. The version of the Toshiba Satellite L650 that we reviewed, the L650-12Q, is a fabulous budget laptop. Its battery life is disappointing, but it will cope well with just about anything asked of it.

This is another solid, well-made mainstream laptop from Toshiba, but a few niggles eat away at its value and attractiveness, and the standard carry-in warranty is disappointing. A few tweaks and this would be a very good laptop, but at present it's just 'good enough'.

A Bargain Buy. If you're looking for an inexpensive multimedia notebook, you'll usually have to be content with a weak graphics card. Not so with Toshiba's Satellite L650D-10H, which can show off with a Radeon HD 5650 at a price of around 600 euro.

Although the Satellite L650-1GD has few flaws and its performance cannot be faulted, it isn't quite as desirable as the likes of the Dell and the Packard Bell. Nevertheless, this is a highly usable mid-range laptop that won't disappoint.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145: The 5145 is a renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with slightly higher clock rates. Therefore it has no DirectX 11 support and a performance between the 4570 and 5470.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel Core i3:
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i5:
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
480M: The Core i5-480M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.66-2.9 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Turion II:
P520: Entry level Dual-Core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. Offers a similar performance as a 2.1 - 2.3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 MB Level 2 Cache.
AMD Phenom II X3:
P820: Mobile 3-core CPU based on the desktop Athlon II X3. Due to the missing level 3 cache and the slow clock speed not really well suited for gamers.
