The Toshiba Portégé Z830-104 is an ultraportable for the travelling professional who needs their laptop lightweight and practical rather than attractive. It might look plain but it has plenty to offer if you need portage. It's a tad on the pricey side for the package on offer.

Ultrabooks are still imperfect machines, but the Portege Z830 really strives to be as less mediocre as possible. With a backlit keyboard, ultra slim body and impressive selection of ports, the Z830 is one of the best equipped ultrabooks out there. Sure, it doesn’t have the best hardware from the lot, but will still deliver a solid experience, while the battery life is nothing short of satisfying.

Although it has several unique features that are sorely missing in Ultrabooks from other manufacturers, the Z830 isn’t head and shoulders above its competition. No other manufacturer has managed to perfect the formula so far, but they all have selling points that make them more desirable than the Toshiba. If you're not beholden to Windows, the 13in MacBook Air, which is available with a similar specification to the Z830 at a similar price, is still our preferred ultra-portable laptop, but Ultrabooks are slowly catching up.

Toshiba's Portégé Z830 is not the first ultrabook to ship, but it's the best suited for business use that we've seen so far. It packs an impressive amount of power into a very slim and light design, but potential buyers should take the all-day battery life claims with a pinch of salt.

As a business proposition, however, the Toshiba Portégé Z830 is entirely convincing. Toshiba has crammed great performance, comfortable ergonomics and convincing battery life into a chassis that weighs barely more than kilogram, and has also managed to shoehorn in all the ports, security and manageability features required of a true business laptop. It might be early days for the Ultrabook, but, on this showing, the Portégé Z830 has a bright future in big business.

Despite the fan noise and flexible display frame, the Portege z835 is a solid ultrabook offering for the average consumer. If you want a thin and light notebook that won’t break the bank, Toshiba’s first ultrabook is a stellar choice. Thanks to the inclusion of backlit keys, all the ports you need and a super thin package the Portege z835 offers an attractive value for the mainstream consumer.

The Toshiba Portégé Z835-P330 is the least expensive Ultrabook on the market right now. It's street price is several hundred dollars less than the Asus Zenbook, and it's even cheaper than the Acer Aspire S3, which doesn't have a dedicated solid state drive (it uses a 320GB HDD and 20GB SSD) or USB 3.0 port.

The Toshiba Portege Z835 is Toshiba’s first ultraportable. We can’t recommend the Toshiba Portege Z835 as an ultrabook – with an i5 processor it might well be a different story, but together lagging in benchmarks, together with the poor keyboard and a few shabby touches, we were distinctly unimpressed. Poor show, Toshiba.

Toshiba's Portege Z835-P330 is an amazing entry into the ultrabook market with a very lightweight design and some extremely long running times. It is one of the most affordable of the new laptops with its $900 price tag yet includes a full range of features including a solid state drive and an amazing number of peripheral ports that puts the competition to shame.

Battery life of the Toshiba Portégé Z835 is really great, especially compared to other ultrabooks. We were able to get about 5-hours of battery life and the category average is about 4-hours. It's crucial to have a good battery life with an ultrabook because their batteries are not removable, so you can't rely on spares.

The Toshiba Portege Z835-P330 may not be the best ultrabook on the market, but it does stand out due to its light weight, exceptional feature set, and category-leading battery life. The Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook UX31 still reigns supreme among ultrabooks because of its solid construction, stellar audio, and better performance, but it's $300 more. If you favor portability over performance, the Z835-P330 is a solid choice.

The $799 Best Buy model of the Toshiba Portege Z835 is an interesting proposition. It’s noticeably lighter than other Ultrabooks and the Macbook Air, features a surprisingly good array of ports and a backlit keyboard, and doesn’t skimp out on the SSD the way the similarly-priced Acer Apsire S3 does. On the other hand, the performance of the Core i3 processor isn’t up to the level of its contemporaries, the display quality is mediocre, and there’s bit too much flex in the screen – an annoying slight on an otherwise rigid machine. This is certainly an easier laptop to recommend than the Acer Ultrabook (the other sub-$1000 option), but not quite as likeable as the Asus Zenbook UX31E or Lenovo IdeaPad U300s.

The Toshiba Portege Z835 is an all-around winner and was a pleasure to review. It has solid build quality, a decent backlit keyboard, a good touchpad, six hours of battery life, and the characteristic light weight (2.4 lbs) and thinness we’ve come to expect from Ultrabooks. Where the Z835 stumbles is performance; the included 128GB SSD is exceptionally slow. The Intel Core i3 processor is bottom of the barrel but should have plenty of oomph for general usage. At $899 the Z835 undercuts existing Ultrabooks by $100 or more and makes for a very attractive choice. It is an ideal on-the-go companion and a tempting alternative to the Apple MacBook Air.

Another Ultrabook contender enters the fray with the arrival of the Toshiba Portege Z835. Following in the footsteps of the Acer S3, Lenovo U300s, and Asus Zenbook, this system aims to provide Windows users with a clear alternative to Apple's popular MacBook Air. Another entry in the MacBook Air clone wars, the Toshiba Portege Z835 offers great bang for the buck in some areas, but also looks and feels a bit cheap.

So far it sounds like a miracle machine, so what’s not to love? The keyboard isn’t too pretty, with nearly-no-travel keys and uneven backlighting that comes off looking cheap. The trackpad is nice, but the buttons are tiny and hard to press, as they’re both stiff and slightly recessed into the chassis, making them difficult to reach. My biggest complaint, though, has to be against the Z835’s lack of stability. I had far more than my fair share of inexplicable problems simply installing apps and more getting them to run successfully. While all the crashes were eventually recoverable, I found I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting issues I really shouldn’t have had to deal with at all.

Aside from the keyboard, the Z835 looks good — and professional — and feels impossibly lightweight. If the crash issues can be remedied (driver updates, perhaps?), Toshiba’s got a surprisingly near-perfect and world-class ultrabook on its hands.

The Toshiba Portege Z835 is arguably the best Ultrabook yet--and certainly the best option under $1,000. For $899, you get the lightest 13-inch laptop around, full-size ports, and an accurate touchpad. The nearly 7 hours of battery life is another big plus. However, the this notebook's stiff keyboard, dull 1366 x 768 screen, and slow-writing SSD can't beat the more-expensive MacBook Air. But if you can accept a few compromises, the Portege Z835 is a fantastic value for students, small business users, or anyone who needs a lightweight, nimble notebook with equal parts portability and style.

The Toshiba Portege Z830 is the best equipped and lightest Ultrabook currently on the market. It has more ports and you won't feel like you've given up expandability for extreme portability. It's insanely light at 2.48 lbs. and very thin. In short, it's a real pleasure to carry. That diet has a drawback or two though: there's lots of lid flex and the notebook has a hollow feel to it when you press surfaces.

The ultrabook market is booming. If you're comparison shopping, $70 more will buy you the Lenovo U300s with a 256GB instead of 128GB SSD; $330 less will buy you the Asus UX31 with a perfectly capable Core i5 and a higher-resolution screen; and of course $630 less will buy you the adequate-for-most-tasks Core i3 Portege. But the Portege Z830-S8302 scores highly in performance, practicality, and sheer sex appeal, though our test unit's so-so space bar was frustrating.

Our impressions of the Portege line-up of products have always been very good. Notebooks like the R500, R600, R700 and R830 have proven themselves to have good battery life, are lightweight and very portable. For business machines to actually be useful out of the office, not much else really matters besides these traits.

The Toshiba is a bit of strange machine. To look at, it has none of the excitement that you might enjoy with a MacBook Air, or the Asus UX31. But it's lighter than both, it has more ports than both - and every other ultrabook - and it's got more features that will appeal to a business user.

But it's not exciting to look at. In fact, it looks like a normal laptop. And that's fine, but it's boring too. We feel churlish even mentioning its styling really, as this is a machine with lots of power, that will be incredibly useful. But for ultrabooks to compete with the Apple ultra-portable machines, there has to be a little excitement, at least in our minds.

We found battery life on the Z830 was excellent, coming in at about five and a half hours of light to medium use. In all, this is a great Ultrabook. Its unique differentiator is that it feels like a traditional notebook that’s been miraculously slimmed down to almost tablet-thickness. The array of ports and the performance are those of a big computer, not of an ultra-thin.

All in all, the Portege Z830 ultrabook offers better battery life than its more expensive i5 siblings. However, putting aside the mediocre display, we strongly advise a hands-on demo before buying – that key drop really is shallow. This isn’t a machine for marathon keyboard sessions.

Overall the Toshiba Portégé Z830 impressed me in every aspect of its design and performance. No matter where I went or who I showed it to, everybody wanted one. The price was the only factor that put down a lot of people. At nearly 4.5k the Toshiba Portégé Z830 is a good AED 850 more expensive than the Acer Aspire S3. That said, it’s still AED 1,150 cheaper than its nearest rival, the unibody and equally slim MacBook Pro 13 which has the same specs inside. So for those who want a true ultrabook experience, the Toshiba Portégé Z830 is a definite buy, despite the slightly high price tag.

If display quality isn’t that important to you, we really have to admit that we’re thrilled with Toshiba’s Portege Z830, which is remarkable product with only a few drawbacks. Many, many details have been taken care of, but there’s still room for improvement, and we hope that the following model will patch up these few flaws, however insignificant they may seem. As Toshiba's first Ultrabook, the Z830 is an excellent computer, booting quickly and performing well. Our main gripe is the slightly flimsy lid. Despite some annoyances, I really enjoyed my time testing the Toshiba Portégé Z830. It is a good all-rounder, but so very slim and light, and it runs on batteries for the best part of a day. The Toshiba Portégé Z830 is remarkably similar to the Toshiba Satellite Z830. However, it packs less memory and has a slower processor than its sibling, resulting in slower performance but 30 mins extra battery life. The only things it offers to justify the extra cost are software-based security features which may be useful to business users.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2677M: Power saving ULV processor clocked at 1.8-2.9 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Offers an integrated HD 3000 clocked at slow 350 / 1200 MHz and a DDR3-1333 memory controller.
