Portability is a technological virtue these days -- gadgets aren't much fun if you have to stay in one place to use them. That's why we all hate fax machines so much. The Toshiba Portege R700 is an impressively portable laptop, both in terms of size and weight. But we've seen cheaper machines that offer better displays and performance than our R700-160 configuration.

The Toshiba Portégé R700 is the latest incarnation of Toshiba's ultra portable business person's notebook. It comes in several iterations and all share some defining characteristics. You can more than double the base asking price if you want an Intel Core i7 processor, 128GB Solid state drive and wireless broadband integration, or for £629 plus VAT you can go for a more humble Core i3 processor, 320GB hard drive and no mobile broadband.

The Toshiba Portege R700 was almost overlooked back at Toshiba’s June press conference, outflanked in the attention seeking stakes as it was by two other oddball mobile machines (The Libretto and Android AC100). It’s a shame really, as the Toshiba Portege R700 is by far the most impressive of the trio – so much so that we’re not hesitating to give it the full five stars. For anyone who needs a laptop on the go, this is your best bet with Windows by a long way.

The Portege R700 is a great notebook, make no mistake about it. It’s extremely thin and light, one of the lightest 13.3” notebooks on the market, especially for notebooks that include an optical drive. Yes, there are myriad flaws, like the occasionally flimsy construction, the terrible disk image it’s loaded with, and the pretty woeful screen. Evaluated as a mainstream ultraportable, it’s pretty great.

The Toshiba Portege R700 is one notebook that will command attention in the office, and if you're carrying one around, you'll probably be the target of envious stares around the room. It's a lightweight, sleek machine that hides a powerful processing punch under the hood. As our benchmarks revealed, this machine is no slouch despite its thin form factor and light weight.

Toshiba has produced an excellent update in the Portégé R700, giving it a long overdue visual refresh and offering up a good balance between price, performance and features. It's just a shame the keyboard isn't a little better.

Even at this pre-production stage, we're very impressed by the Portege R700. While there are a few minor niggles, we're confident they will all be resolved for mass-production and this is sure to be a big winner for Toshiba.

Frequent travelers or anyone else looking for a highly portable but powerful notebook will find a lot to like about the Portege R700. It's one of the fastest notebooks we've tested under 4 pounds, and the design feels stronger than its 12-inch predecessor. We also appreciate the machine's 6 hours of battery life. Unfortunately, we had to dock points for its high temperatures and less-than-stellar ergonomics. A part of us wishes Toshiba switched to the ULV version of Intel's Core i5 CPU for cooler and quieter operation, though you'd sacrifice some performance. Nevertheless, the R700 is a strong choice as is.

Few notebooks rise to the top of a business executive’s wish list, but Toshiba’s top-of-the-line Portégé continues to reign as king of the road-warrior ultraportbable. Clad in a sleek, brushed-magnesium-alloy shell but packing an Intel Core i7 CPU inside, the inch-thick Portégé R700-S1330 doesn’t just look like a Fortune 500 notebook—it performs like one, too. With superb performance, battery life, and business features, this all-star ultraportable knocks it out of the park at a not-so-elite price.

The Toshiba Portege R700 maintains the sleek, light and strong design of its predecessors, but it's a much more powerful notebook. It shuns ultra-low-voltage processors in favour of full performance Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs and it can run up to 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM. It's a brilliant option for small business and corporate users who want something small and light that doesn't compromise on performance and built-in features (such as an optical drive).

With so much power in such a slender frame, the Toshiba Portege R700 is definitely a little marvel. We like it a lot and this is not only due to its performance and small size, but also its build quality, which feels sturdy. We wish it had a better keyboard though, and that its fingerprint reader software worked with Firefox. Above all, we wish it didn't get so bloody warm.

Toshiba's Portege R700-S1320 certainly offers a high level of performance in an extremely compact package. Is the Toshiba Portege R700-S1310 the ultimate ultraportable? Whichever of the three Porteges you prefer, you'll get an ultraportable -- OK, a 13.3-inch notebook that straddles the line between ultraportable and thin and light -- with ample style and elegant engineering. The only multimedia segment that this notebook can't cope with is gaming, as expected. Intel's integrated graphics card may be doing its best, but fresh titles can't go over 20 fps even at lowest settings. Naturally, any game older than, say, two years will work just fine (at lowest detail levels). The sound subsystem is nothing to be envious about - what's more, the sound is reminiscent of bedside radios. Therefore, the speakers will serve their purpose, but if you wish for a higher quality solution, you'll have to look for an external solution. Battery autonomy allows for less ambitious excursions, and the thing we have to reproach in this department is the very slow charger, which takes an eternity to charge the battery once it's been significantly drained. We hope that the problem was specific to our sample. As far as other flaws, not many are present, the largest of which is major heating on the left side of the notebook. Whenever the notebook was put under full load, the part left of the Tab key seemed hot enough to cause minor burns. Still, we dared to test out theory and the consequences weren't nearly as dramatic. After all, winter's on its way, rumoured to be the coldest one in years... The second and perhaps tallest of obstacles for buying this PC is its very high price. It may be justified up to a point with top production quality, choice of materials and hardware, as well as the very Toshiba brand. The PC is also factory-shipped with Office Starter and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit preinstalled, none of which are dirt cheap. However, we feel that most users won't find these qualities to be redeeming enough and that they'll turn elsewhere in search for a cheaper variant. Those who wish for a high-quality, ultra-portable 13” notebook will, however, be catered for by this model.

The Portégé R700-184 packs a decent amount of performance into a thin-and-light package, and should prove a good companion to a road warrior, especially with its built-in 3G modem. However, it is not as sturdy as some laptops and, discounting the Core i5 processor, seems pricey for the specification.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrated (shared memory) graphics card in the intel Atom N4xx CPUs. Minimally faster than an old GMA 950 and therefore not suited for 3D games or HD videos (only MPEG2 acceleration).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i5:
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
560M:
The Core i5-560M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks also between 2.67-3.2 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.
Intel Core i3:
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
330M:
The Core i3-330M is a slower clocked 350M and therefore also lacks the Turbo Boost feature and clocks with max. 2.13 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
