Goodbye to Atom? The NB550D is Toshiba’s latest flagship netbook, featuring the new AMD C-50 APU along with an AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics unit and high-quality Harman Kardon speakers. Is it the perfect entertainer for €349, even without a matt HD display?

While Toshiba's NB500-series is stylish across the board and the speakers on the higher-end models are certainly impressive, we can't help but think the NB550D's C50 CPU is poorly complemented by a sub-HD Ready screen and only 1GB of RAM (we hope a higher-specced model will be brought out soon). However, if its price remains below £300 it's likely to be a very strong contender, especially considering its premium feel and impressive battery life claims.

Unlike Toshiba's previous netbooks which came equipped with Intel Atom processors, the NB550D comes with a dual core 1GHz AMD C50 processor. It should not only be faster and more energy efficient than AMD's previous netbook chips, it also has an integrated HD 6250 graphics processor that should be capable of playing high definition video.

The Toshiba NB550D feels sturdy, looks good, it's light and it has good speed for a netbook. The HDMI port should make it appeal to users who want something small that they can plug into their TVs to watch streaming video or downloads. Note that we did see choppy video on our high-defintion television. We also wish it had better battery life, as its performance in our battery test doesn't stack up well against recent competitors.

With the NB550D we are witnessing the establishment of netbooks at the lower end of the mobile computing spectrum, with slightly lower specs to justify their ultraportable credentials. .To sum up, the Toshiba NB550D is a very capable netbook, with a spec which – courtesy of its C-50 archiecture and Harman Kardon speakers – elevates the netbook genre to a credible alternative to the notebook. All these and some others will make the NB550D one of the best 10 inchers on the market right now, placing it up there towards the top of the charts. Thus, if you’re looking for one of the best netbooks you can get these days, this Toshiba should be one of your top options to consider.

This will ultimately be the main bottleneck in the NB550D, and even doubling it would likely push this straight to the A-List. As it stands we love this little powerhouse, but it could be so much more.

Our only major concern is the very low amount of memory. 1GB may be suitable for a Linux environment, but Windows 7 is at its heart a memory-hungry desktop OS. Once you assign RAM to the integrated graphics, and hand over what Windows demands, there is around 100MB of free RAM to use for applications. This will ultimately be the main bottleneck in the NB550D, and even doubling it would likely push this straight to the A-List. As it stands we love this little powerhouse, but it could be so much more.

The single-core Intel Atom CPU is definitely the lower-end of the spectrum, but that holds true to the cheap price of this laptop. It does perfectly well for productivity tasks, like word processing and Internet use, but too much multitasking does slow down the laptop, especially since it only has 1GB of memory. The integrated graphics processor is completely unable to play any 3D games and is only adequate enough for online video playback and some light multimedia use. The Toshiba Mini NB505's 6-cell battery lasts an average of 7:00-7:30 hours, which is longer than other similar netbooks by almost an hour.

The application of AMD’s new chipset energizes this otherwise conventional 10in netbook. For anyone looking for a relatively affordable 10in laptop with low-resolution screen that can run Windows subjectively decently fast, the Toshiba NB550D-10G would be our choice over an Intel Atom offering. Sadly, Toshiba may have recognised the writing on the wall for netbooks in the face of demand for the iPad, and seems to be running down stocks of this particular model. Look out for the similarly specified Toshiba NB550D-109 which looks to be more plentiful, a black and brown-finished model that lists the same hardware specification.

Like the NB520, Toshiba's NB550 is very attractive and well-built. Its AMD Fusion innards give it the ability to handle Full HD video on and off-line as well as providing an HDMI-output, strengths which put it a step above most budget netbooks. Other specifications are basic and the screen is still sub-HD, but considering its low price these issues are easy to forgive. Throw in the soft-touch finish, decent battery life and excellent speakers, and you have one of the better entrants in its class – though heavy discounts on older ultraportables make for strong competition.

The NB550D is by far the best mini-laptop we've seen in a long time and Toshiba has proved that the netbook can still be great when done right. Offering great usability, ample features and all-day mobility at a low price, this stylish machine is very easy to recommend.

Like the slow hard drive, getting Windows Starter is an example of the way the NB550 isn't a particularly well balanced system. Putting something more powerful than the Atom into a netbook form factor reveals that there are other disadvantages to the netbook than the middling performance. The small screen and keyboard are actually a better match for a processor that doesn't encourage you to use more demanding programs; the C-50 processor makes you want to do more and we'd like to see it in something more like a 12-inch ultraportable with a fast hard drive. With this performance and battery life and at this price, the Toshiba N550 is a winner; what's disappointing is that it could be rather more.

What holds it back from a full five stars is that while AMD has upstaged its rival and Toshiba has put together a perfect showcase for it, they’re just a little too late. Tablets such as the Asus Transformer or iPad 2 are the place to look for really interesting portable computers at the moment, and laptop prices have fallen so far that you can get a real machine for not a lot more. If you’re after a netbook, this is the one to buy. But that’s by no means a small ‘if’.
