TikTok has announced that it will soon enhance the way users express themselves with .gifs that come up as a result of AI-generated suggestions. The animated images in question will all come courtesy of Giphy thanks to a new agreement between its company and the social media platform. It is slated to result in a change to the direct message (DM) interface in the latter's app.

TikTok's apparently relentless drive to AI all the things (or as many as possible, at least) has come for its DMs and how users interact via the medium of GIFs.

The social media giant asserts that it can save a user the time finding the perfect animated way of responding to another, even if they just can't bring it to mind that second, with its latest feature - so long as it comes from the current Giphy library.

The Shutterstock subsidiary will have its API integrated into TikTok's messaging UI, which should allow the latter's "specialized recommendation engine" to extract the GIF most "relevant" (presumably to the conversation in question) to make "communication more engaging and expressive".

The GIF picker is touted to be "a seamless and intuitive" addition to the TikTok app. The feature is projected to drop in the fourth quarter of 2024 or the first of 2025.
