The series is one of Ubisoft's most well-known offerings, with multiple titles released during its golden era, and the recently announced live-action adaptation has also revealed its star and director.

The year 2004 was an excellent one for gamers, with publishing giant Ubisoft releasing a slew of new titles that were widely received by fans and enthusiasts alike. Titles like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2, and Prince of Persia: Warrior Within were some of the key highlights of the year. However, among these greats, Ubisoft also released a brand-new original IP called Far Cry, which would become one of its most successful franchises.

Developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft, the game is a first-person survival shooter that follows Jack Carver, a former American Special Forces operative, as he explores a remote island to reunite with his friend, the journalist Valerie Constantine. As he makes his way through the island, he discovers that it is ruled by a mad scientist who performs all sorts of strange genetic experiments on the island's inhabitants. One could consider it a playthrough of what it would feel like if Rambo met The Island of Dr. Moreau.

Twenty-one years, six Far Cry games, and five spin-offs later, the series is now headed to bigger screens; FX has announced a live-action TV series, first reported by Variety, that will stream on Hulu and Disney+. Development of the show has been handed to Noah Hawley and Rob Mac. The former has written for shows like Alien: Earth, Fargo, and Legion, with Fargo’s five seasons garnering a total of 70 nominations and winning seven Emmy Awards. “What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is that it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme,” Hawley said.

Rob Mac, formerly McElhenney, on the other hand, created and wrote It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is running its 17th season, making it the longest-running live-action sitcom in American history. The two have a long history with FX. “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for ‘Far Cry,’” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said.

Mac, delighted by the change to work with Hawley, was grateful to Ubisoft for the momentous opportunity to adapt Far Cry to live action, stating: “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.” The series will be shot much like Fargo, with each season featuring a new story and cast, akin to the Far Cry games.
