The Gigabyte AORUS RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Gaming Boxes will provide the power of the Ampere architecture over a Thunderbolt 3 connection
The next-generation of Gigabyte AORUS Gaming Boxes is almost here, and it will pack a punch. According to Videocardz, Gigabyte will release RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 editions of the AORUS Gaming Box, but the website has only provided details on the former for the time being. The size of the AORUS Gaming Box remains unchanged, meaning that it measures 300 x 140 x 170 mm and weighs 3.8 kg with a card installed. Gigabyte has included an RGB light strip on the front of the eGPU too, along with slightly different I/O than it included on the RTX 2080 Ti edition.
As the photo below demonstrates, the models will have three DisplayPorts, two HDMI connections, a Gigabit Ethernet port and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. There is also what appears to be a USB 2.0 Type-A port on the front, along with a Thunderbolt 3 port on the back for linking the AORUS Gaming Box to a laptop.
It is worth noting that the 40 Gbps bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 operating over PCIe 3.0 x4 will hold the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 back somewhat, just as it does with previous-generation cards. According to Videocardz, the RTX 3080 will have up to 495 W at its disposal, thanks to the inclusion of a 550 W power supply.
It remains unclear how much Gigabyte will charge for its new AORUS Gaming Boxes. However, Videocardz expects the company to announce at least the RTX 3080 version 'very soon'.
