Texas Instruments low-power GaN series releases to bring super compact power adapters

Texas Instruments low-power GaN series has made its debut to meet consumers' demand for power adapters that are more portable, lighter, and smaller. In addition, the new product portfolio aims to be highly energy-efficient while offering a quick charging solution.

The general manager of the High Voltage Power Supply Division in Texas Instruments, Kannan Soundarapandian, says, "With the expansion of our portfolio, designers can bring the power-density benefits of low-power GaN technology to more applications that consumers use every day, such as mobile phone and laptop adapters, TV power-supply units, and USB wall outlets."

In the new portfolio of low-power gallium nitride products, there are the LMG3624, LMG3622, and LMG3626 field-effect transistors with integrated gate drivers. All of them deliver the most precise integrated current sensing in the industry. This accuracy will help designers attain maximum efficiency without needing an external shunt resistor.

Moreover, the low-power GaN products from Texas Instruments can reduce power losses by up to 94%. This will make the new charging solutions with less than a 75-watt rating reach up to 94% efficiency. On the other hand, the chargers with more than a 75-watt rating can reach above 95% efficiency with the new FETs. (Anker GaN II 100W curr. US$59.99 on Amazon)

What's more interesting is that the charging solutions with the new low-power GaN FETs can help reduce the size by as much as 50% when compared to typical silicon-based solutions.
