Tesla stops selling its electric cars with 'wasteful' charging cable as Elon Musk advises to buy wall connectors instead

Tesla used to include a mobile charging cable with each new EV purchase, but Elon Musk now says that this is 'wasteful' and owners will have to buy one separately, if needed. The charging cable is currently sold out over at Tesla, but Musk did promise to slash its price in half, add more adapters to it, and make it 'easy to order with the car.'

Tesla vehicles will no longer ship with a charging cable included in the price, as Tesla is doing with its cars what Apple did with its iPhones a few years back when it stopped putting chargers in the box. Just as Apple did at the time, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk justified the move with the argument that the inclusion of a mobile connector is "wasteful" since owners already have wall charging stations at home, or use Superchargers.

Since plenty of Tesla buyers like to keep their charging cable that came with the car in the trunk at all times in case they need to top up, albeit slowly, Musk said they will soothe the mobile connector removal pains by lowering its price. Not only is the charging cable still listed at US$400 on Tesla's website, however, but it is also out of stock at the moment. Soon you will be able to order the cable for US$200 instead of the US$400 it commands, though, and Tesla will be making it "easy to order with the car." Moreover, the carmaker will include more adapters in the mobile charging kit than it contained before, apart from slashing the price in half.

Apple's move dragged the whole phone industry with it. Under various pretenses - from electronic waste to the argument that people already have chargers - manufacturers now ask you to buy one separately. Some EV makers, however, already didn't include a charging cable with a car purchase before Tesla did it. In any case, Elon Musk recommends "installing Tesla wall connector well before car arrives," so you can head over to Amazon and order one, though it won't be a replacement for those overnight trickle charging situations that sometimes arise and call for the mobile connector that Tesla used to include with every EV purchase.
