Starting next year, new British homes or commercial buildings like supermarkets and office spaces will have to be equipped with electric charging stations. The law will mandate retrofitting EV chargers in older buildings that undergo significant renovations, too. According to the government, the home charging legislation could add up to 145,000 new electric car charging stations per year in the UK.

Speaking at the Confederation of British Industry's conference today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is announcing a sea change in England's EV charging infrastructure. Starting next year, all new homes in England will have electric charging stations mandated by law. That goes for newly built supermarkets, workplaces, and even buildings that undergo a major renovation, too.

According to the government's calculations, the law could add up to 145,000 new charging points each year. Prime Minister Boris Johnson chimed in:

This is a pivotal moment - we cannot go on as we are. We have to adapt our economy to the green industrial revolution.

Тhe British Competition and Markets Authority warns that the UK currently has 25,000 stations and will need to scale that infrastructure by a factor of ten by 2030 when new diesel and petrol car sales are to be banned. Thus, the EV charging stations mandate for new homes would be one of the main legislation tools in the government's arsenal to address the discrepancy. Labor leadership is warning that there is a huge geographical divide when it comes to charging stations concentration, and the new legislation isn't enough to solve it.

London and the South East have more public car charging points than the rest of England and Wales combined. Yet there is nothing here to help address this. Nor is there help so lower and middle income families can afford electric vehicles or the investment required to build the gigafactories we need.

The law also includes provisions to equip all new fast-charging stations with contactless payment abilities, as the government wants to make topping up electric cars "as easy as refueling a petrol or diesel car today."
