Tesla rolls out isolated charging port heating with latest software update
Using an electric vehicle in cold weather presents several challenges. Drivers often complain about reduced driving ranges and longer charging times in winter, but charging ports getting stuck due to ice buildup can also be frustrating. However, Tesla has released an update that makes life a bit easier by enabling the heating of the charging port separately.
Tesla cars have had the ability to heat the charging port for some time. However, drivers had no way to just defrost the charging port before accessing it, meaning other parts of the car, including the cabin and rear window, got warmed too. Now, Tesla owners can choose to heat their charging port separately, although they can still pair it with other parts of the vehicle.
The feature is included in software version 2024.44.3.1, which has been confirmed to be rolling out to the Model Y and Model X. Other models are expected to get the update soon.
The option can be found in Controls > Service > Charge Port Heater settings. While making access to the charging port in the cold easier, the new heating feature will also help conserve battery power by targeting only the part of the car that needs to be heated.
Tesla owners complain about other parts in colder climates, including frozen doors and windows. Due to the frameless design, the window rolls down a little before the door opens. However, ice buildup can prevent the window from winding down, stopping the door from unlocking.
Another niggling issue is the door handles getting stuck in winter. The Model S and Model X, for example, have powered handles that are flush with the body when the car is locked. However, ice can cover the handle and overpower the mechanism that pushes them out.
