Elon Musk has now mandated both a free FSD trial for all new sales, and education on the capabilities of Tesla's autonomous driving system.
"Almost no one actually realizes how well (supervised) FSD actually works," he quipped in an internal memo to employees.
The Full Self-Driving V12 option is so advanced, according to Musk, that Tesla's sales people now have to train and educate each client of its capabilities before delivery of the vehicle.
Tesla's CEO acknowledged that "this will slow down the delivery process" yet insists that the mandatory aftersales FSD training of customers is "nonetheless a hard requirement."
Free Tesla FSD trial
Needless to say, after the driver-assist system education owners will need to practice, and Elon Musk thought about that, too.
In addition to the autonomous driving feature training, Tesla will be doling out a free month of FSD access as a trial option. In subscription terms, this is a $199 value if upgrading from a basic Autopilot feature.
Tesla has been in hot water about the autonomous driving claims it used to make about Autopilot and FSD driver-assist software. Gone are the days when Elon Musk promised a robotaxi without steering wheel or a car rental service coming to your autonomous Tesla to earn extra on the side.
Tesla is now very careful with the descriptive language it chooses when detailing the Autopilot or FSD services with Level 2 autonomy, and would rather demonstrate the features live for customers than be left legally exposed.
