Tesla has now officially stopped offering the Cybertruck range extender, a few weeks after it disappeared from its website. The pricey $16,000 add-on was supposed to fix the car's poor range performance.
The Cybertruck was criticized by reviewers for its drivable range, which was as low as 240 miles in real-world performance. The range dropped even further when hauling heavier loads or during winter. In some extreme cases, the tests reported ranges below 100 miles.
In response, Tesla announced the modular Cybertruck range extender. An additional battery pack that would take up space in the truck's bed. Initially, the accessory promised ranges of up to 470 miles for the dual-motor Cybertruck and 440 miles for the tri-motor Cyberbeast.
These were later reduced to 445 miles on the Cybertruck and 415 miles on the Cyberbeast with all-terrain wheels. To add to the woes, Tesla recalled every Cybertruck made between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025, due to issues with rim pieces falling off.
A few weeks ago (via Electrek), Tesla quietly removed the add-on from online configurations for the vehicle on its website. It now appears that the company has given up on the accessory.
The company has started to send emails to customers who paid the $2000 deposit to book one. It's offering complete refunds as it's "no longer planning to sell Range Extender for Cybertruck."
Despite the issues, the Cybertruck was praised for its impressive specs and ability to handle terrain, even if it couldn't replace a traditional pickup. It is unclear why the accessory was cancelled. Tesla has not made any official statement on the cancellation for now.
