Tucker Carlson, who likely needs no introduction, recently took the Tesla Cybertruck through rigorous testing in the demanding terrains of northern New England by professional loggers, and the results were revealing.
Navigating through the muddy backroads of Maine, the Cybertruck started off great, but at one point, got stuck in the mud - a situation that was most likely caused by the lack of being fitted with mud tires. Mud tires are essential for maintaining traction in such swampy, slippery conditions - all thanks to their significantly deeper treads allowing for an enhanced grip. Without them, even the most capable trucks would struggle, so the blame hardly lies on the Cybertruck alone.
However, the Cybertruck itself is plenty powerful, and with proper tires, would most probably have handled the terrain rather effortlessly. That being said, a far more critical concern emerged during the test - the truck's drivable range. With a range of around ~240 miles in the real world, the Cybertruck fails to offer nearly enough miles to measure up against the 400-mile daily runs that the loggers regularly clock on their trucks.
Moreover, the range would likely drop even further during the cold winters of Maine, and even more so when hauling heavy loads. In extreme cases, the range could even drop below 100 miles, as we have witnessed in previous tests. The long charging times taken by the Cybertruck is yet another major drawback, compared to ICEs which can fill up in a matter of minutes.
Regardless of these issues, the Cybertruck received plenty of praise from the men who tested it. Some even remarked that it handles rather well on regular roads and even on some of the trickier logging trails, with its comparatively smooth ride and abundance of tech inside attracting positive impressions.
That being said, most of the testers concluded that despite the impressive specs of the Cybertruck, it is still better suited as a recreational or lifestyle vehicle rather than a work truck. The ~240-mile range is extremely limiting for daily, heavy-duty use, and the range plummets sharply once unfavorable weather and heavy payloads are factored in, particularly in the case of the logging industry where long distances and rough conditions are to be expected.
In the end, the Tesla Cybertruck did come through and won over some of its aggressors with its performance and technology, but its shortcomings, especially in range and versatility raise the question of whether this electric pickup is ready to take the place of regular ones. For the foreseeable future, it appears that the Tesla Cybertruck is better suited for someone looking for a cutting-edge, futuristic vehicle rather than those on the lookout for a rugged, heavy-duty work truck.
