Up to 98-inches: TCL P8L mini LED TV goes global with up to 512 dimming zones

TCL has announced a new QLED TV globally, dubbed the P8L. The TV will likely sit in the middle of TCL's lineup, offering a good number of dimming zones for improved HDR performance, available in sizes ranging from 55 inch to a whopping 98 inch.

As mentioned, TCL claims that the P8L will feature up to 512 dimming zones, but does not mention whether every variant will feature the same number. For instance, the well-reviewed QM8K is also available with up to a 98" screen size, but it also features 3,760 dimming zones, which is a lot higher than the 65-inch QM8K, which only features 1,680.

Courtesy of TCL's upgraded HVA panel, the company claims a native contrast ratio of 6500:1. 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut has also been touted, although its actual real-life performance and color accuracy can only be verified with independent reviews.

Like many other premium TVs, the TCL P8L will feature high-refresh rate capabilities as well. The panel will support up to 144 Hz natively, with up to 288 Hz in Game Mode, most likely at 1080p, similar to TCL's other offerings. Video input will be taken care of by dual HDMI 2.1 and dual HDMI 2.0 ports. Clearly, in order to get 4K at 144 Hz, customers will have to use the faster HDMI 2.1 ports.

Wireless connectivity will be taken care of by WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.4, while other inputs include LAN, optical audio, a USB port, satellite input, antenna input, 3.5 mm AV jack, and a C+ slot as well. The TV will run Google TV, which is pretty standard for TCL's offerings.

Needless to say, someone purchasing a TV this large will always be recommended to shell out extra for a decent home theatre audio system (Bose Smart Ultra is currently $1,000 on Amazon), but the TCL P8L does have audio output options, courtesy of dual 10W speakers and 20W subwoofer for the 85" and 98" variants. The lower-end variants, however, will get a 5W subwoofer.
