Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is best described as Diablo set in the Warhammer universe. Developed by NeocoreGames, it launched in June 2018. Players step into the role of an Inquisitor, hunting heretics, mutants and xenos in the dark Caligari Sector. As an agent of the Emperor, you infiltrate massive space fortresses, explore hostile planets and battle Chaos cults to unravel a deep conspiracy.
Players can choose from three classes: the heavily armored Crusader, the agile Assassin or the powerful Psyker. Skills, weapons and gear are fully customizable. Unlike traditional hack-and-slash games, Inquisitor emphasizes tactical combat with a cover system. Beyond the story campaign, it offers procedurally generated missions, seasonal events and cooperative multiplayer for lasting engagement. Up to four players can team up in co-op mode.
Great atmosphere, but tedious progression
In its review, the German magazin GameStar praised Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr for its immersive 40K atmosphere and action-packed combat. The distinct classes, each with unique weapons and abilities, add variety, while diverse locations, from cities to ice planets and space stations, keep the campaign visually engaging. However GameStar, criticized the sluggish progression system, where level-ups offer only minor improvements.
Repetitive missions and an uninspired loot system, with many items feeling too similar, were also noted as drawbacks. Given these criticisms, reviews for Inquisitor have been mixed. On Steam, the game holds a 'Mostly Positive' rating from around 18,000 reviews, with 75% of them being positive. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 67 and a User Score of 6.6. Despite its flaws, the action RPG may still appeal to Warhammer 40K fans or players looking for an alternative to Diablo or Path of Exile – especially with the current Steam discount.
