First released on the PlayStation in 1998, Resident Evil 2 remains a landmark in the survival horror genre. On January 25, 2019, Capcom brought out its long-awaited remake for PC and consoles. Technically rebuilt from the ground up, the game stays true to the original story. Players once again step into the shoes of Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop on his first day and Claire Redfield, who arrives in zombie-ravaged Raccoon City in search of her brother Chris. While the core plot is mostly unchanged, the dialogue and cutscenes have been refreshed to feel more modern and emotionally gripping.
The remake keeps the core gameplay of the original intact but brings it up to modern standards with a host of improvements. Fixed camera angles are replaced by an over-the-shoulder view and the controls have been completely revamped. The inventory system and visual presentation have also been updated. Instead of static, pre-rendered backgrounds, the game now features fully realized 3D environments with dynamic lighting and particle effects, all built with Capcom’s RE Engine. Classic locations like the police station, lab and sewers have been redesigned both visually and structurally, making exploration and puzzle-solving more immersive. While the core mix of resource management, puzzles and tactical combat remains, it feels sharper and more intense than ever.
Reviews: Strong atmosphere and visuals, though some moments feel overly scripted
The German gaming magazine GameStar reviewed the Resident Evil 2 remake at launch and was thoroughly impressed. “This is how remakes should be,” the testers noted. The game stands out with its gripping atmosphere, intense sound design and graphic violence that keeps the tension high. Technically, it delivers smooth 60 FPS performance, sharp visuals and a wide range of PC settings. However, GameStar did point out some weaknesses: boss fights felt too easy or heavily scripted, certain puzzles seemed forced or implausible and the controls lacked precision in chaotic moments.
Despite a few minor flaws, GameStar awarded the Resident Evil 2 remake an impressive 90 out of 100. On Metacritic, it earned a Metascore of 89, with players echoing that sentiment through a User Score of 8.9. The response on Steam is even more striking – 97% of over 118,000 reviews are positive.
