Borderlands is widely seen as the benchmark for looter shooters, a genre that blends fast-paced first-person combat with the constant hunt for better gear. Thanks to procedurally generated loot, nearly every enemy drops new weapons or equipment, keeping the gameplay fresh and rewarding. This loop fuels a strong sense of progression, much like in role-playing games. Hardly any other title - except perhaps Borderlands 2 - combines this formula as good as Borderlands 3, mixing over-the-top gunplay, dark humor and a vibrant comic-book style. Developed by Gearbox Software and released by 2K Games in 2019, it’s the latest entry in the series.
As one of four distinct Vault Hunters, you blast your way through a wild, multi-planet adventure. At the heart of the story is the battle against the Calypso Twins, who threaten the galaxy with their cult, the Children of the Vault. Along the way, you'll team up with new allies, face massive bosses and collect an endless array of weapons – from walking machine guns to teleporting grenades. Borderlands 3 delivers fast-paced first-person action, deep RPG mechanics with expansive skill trees and a fully playable co-op mode.
Reviews: Action-packed gameplay with a flat story
The German gaming magazine GameStar praised Borderlands 3 for its fast-paced, action-heavy gameplay, an enormous arsenal of often bizarre weapons and a well-designed class and skill system. Combat feels dynamic, progression stays engaging and the co-op mode is flexible enough to let players of different levels team up without issue. The 40-hour campaign is backed by New Game Plus, endgame content and optional Chaos difficulty levels for added replayability. However, the main story didn’t quite meet GameStar's expectations – the Calypso Twins lack the charisma of previous villains and the plot feels simpler by comparison. Technical shortcomings also stood out: the interface appears outdated, enemy AI is inconsistent and some quality-of-life features are missing.
GameStar gave Borderlands 3 a solid score of 88 out of 100. On Metacritic, the looter shooter received strong reviews from critics, earning a Metascore of 88. However, the User Score sits at a more mixed 5.6, likely due to criticism of the story. On Steam, the game has over 113,000 user reviews with a very positive average rating of 85%, showing that many players still appreciate the overall experience despite its flaws.
90% discount on Steam
Borderlands 3 usually goes for the full price of $60 on Steam, but until April 10 you can grab it for just $6 thanks to a 90% discount. It should be noted that Borderlands 3 is frequently available at this price - most recently in mid-March and early February, as can be tracked via SteamDB. The Super Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game, bonus cosmetics and a Season Pass with four DLCs, is also heavily discounted – down 80% to $16 instead of $80.
By the way: Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next Borderlands game, set to launch on September 23, 2025. The first gameplay trailer has already been revealed, though initial reactions were mixed.
