With the Steam Summer Sale in full swing, it's time to have a look at what platformers Valve's game store has to offer. Whether you have a taste for the nostalgic or simply want to see what all the fuss is about, there's oodles of fun to be had in Steam's discounted platformer games.

1. Have a Nice Death

The premise for Have a Nice Death is as follows: Death is tired and overworked and needs a holiday. But he has to cut his holiday short in order to deal with employees of Death Incorporated who have run amok. Have a Nice Death is a platformer that features fast-paced hack-and-slash combat mixed in with rogue-like mechanics, plenty of character progression, and a dry sense of humour that's completely off the rails.

Have a Nice Death's underworld is hilariously set up like a bureaucracy, which sort of makes the procedurally-generated level design rather amusing if you've ever been lost in the generic halls of a boring office building. In Have a Nice Death, upgrades come in the form of a number of scythes, and they also come as spells and secondary weapons that add to the variety of combat encounters.

Have a Nice Death is just US$17.49 during the Steam Summer Sale until July 13.

2. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

If you grew up in the era of the PlayStation 1 and 2, you'll know all about the insanity that is the Crash Bandicoot franchise. If you didn't, the Crash Bandicoot lineup consists of fast-paced, narrative, puzzle-platformer games that don't take themselves too seriously — a welcome breath of fresh air in a world filled with the likes of Call of Duty and FarCry.

It's About Time is a modern addition to the Crash Bandicoot series that honours the legacy of its forebears and builds on them by adding new playable characters, more abilities, and fun time- and multiverse-hopping high jinks. In It's About Time, Crash teams up with Coco to stop his nemeses, Neo Cortex and N. Tropy, as they try to tear apart the multiverse.

Crash Bandicoot: It's About Time is available for US$19.99 during the Steam Summer Sale.

3. Hi-Fi Rush

Hi-Fi Rush is something of a rhythm game meets puzzle-platformer meets beat-em-up with a splash of social commentary on the ills of capitalism. The main character, an amateur rock star named Chai, teams up with his comrades to take down an evil mega corporation in a world where everything must happen to the beat of the music.

Hi-Fi Rush stands out for its unique comic-style visuals, challenging, rhythm-based combat, and killer soundtrack featuring original music by Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy. Hi-Fi Rush also surprises with solid character progression, endearing characters, and thoughtful pacing that helps keep things fresh as the story plays out.

Hi-Fi Rush is on sale for US$23.99 during the Steam Summer Sale.
