In most fantasy RPGs, you wield the sword, but Bladesong puts you behind the forge. Released into Early Access on January 22, 2026, the game has already received more than 450 reviews, earning an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating of 95%. The story is straightforward yet compelling: the world has plunged into chaos after the mysterious “songs” fell silent, but in Eren Keep – one of the last surviving strongholds – the forge still burns.
In Bladesong, players take on commissions from warriors, nobles and mercenaries, crafting swords to meet specific requirements for damage, balance, weight and design. The heart of the game lies in its flexible forging system: blades are custom-shaped, with handles, guards and pommels assembled modularly from materials such as steel, wood, leather, obsidian or ivory. When stepping away from the forge, players can explore locations like the marketplace or tavern to uncover political intrigue and whispers of rebellion. Alongside the story-driven campaign, a creative mode provides a sandbox environment for unrestricted forging.
Early reviews of Bladesong highlight its deep crafting system as a standout feature, with many players also praising the atmospheric dark fantasy world and its engaging NPCs. However, some note that the game is not especially beginner-friendly and that the forging process can feel repetitive over time. Still, for RPG fans looking for a break from traditional combat- and quest-heavy gameplay, Bladesong offers a refreshing alternative. The game is also well suited for handheld play – it is rated “Playable” on the Steam Deck (available on Amazon for $665). Until February 5, Bladesong is available on Steam with a 10% discount, priced at around $18 instead of $20.
