Star Wars: Fate of the Galaxy now free to download and play

Star Wars fans can now download Fate of the Galaxy, a free fan-made space combat game that has been in development since 2007. Based on the open-source FSO engine that powers FreeSpace 2, it aims to recreate the feel of the films’ starfighter battles.
The scope of the game is substantial. Players have access to 64 flyable ships across Rebel and Imperial sides, each with its own cockpit, handling, speed and controls. Both factions have interconnected story campaigns, alongside dynamic campaign options, standalone missions, custom mission creation, training scenarios and LAN multiplayer. Mouse and keyboard, gamepads, controllers and flight stick are all supported, as is virtual reality.
Fate of the Galaxy can be downloaded for Windows, Linux and macOS via ModDB. Its feature list is impressive for a volunteer-led production, although players should keep in mind this is an unofficial fan project, not a licensed Star Wars release. The team says it plans to support the game with future updates.
