Featuring a resolution of 105 effective megapixels together with high frame rate of up to 112 fps, the Sony IMX927 CMOS sensor aims to surpass the competition. The sensor comes in both monochrome and color variants.

Featuring a diagonal of 39.7 millimeters, Sony's latest square camera sensor is only slightly smaller than a full-frame sensor. While the Sony IMX927 is primarily intended for industrial applications, especially machine vision applications for automated mass production, it may also be ideal for video cameras.

Although it's still unclear whether the sensor can actually be installed in a camera, the technology is exciting. The IMX927 captures a resolution of 10,272 × 10,272 pixels, or approximately 105 MP, at a speed of up to 113 frames per second with an 8-bit color depth, or 73 frames per second with 12-bit – all with a global shutter. This means that all pixels are read simultaneously, rather than line by line, thus avoiding the rolling shutter effect.

The sensor is available both with a Bayer filter as a color sensor and without a filter as a monochrome sensor, the latter of which is intended to achieve significantly higher light intensity. The Sony IMX927 also offers an integrated HDR function designed to increase the dynamic range without having to combine multiple photos, so the effective frame rate does not have to be reduced in order to use HDR.

Sony uses the same mount, which is now used in 16 different sensors in this series, so existing equipment can theoretically be upgraded. Sony also offers cropped versions of the IMX927, including the IMX937 with 105 MP and a maximum frame rate of 56 frames per second, as well as the smaller IMX298 and IMX929 with a resolution of 64 MP and 51 MP, respectively, but with higher frame rates of up to 138 fps and 225 fps. More details about the Sony IMX927 can be found here.
