Splitgate 2’s rocky launch prompted 1047 games to plead its community for another chance, after the studio shifted the game back to beta, and scheduled a relaunch for early 2026.
The studio took to social media on August 21, 2025, and begged the fans in a candid post:
“Give us one more chance at our relaunch. Totally understand we’ve disappointed. Hope we’ll be able to earn your trust back.”
1047 Games admitted to rushing the launch, with co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian commenting, “We’ve definitely made some mistakes along the way, but supporting our community has always been our top priority.”
Splitgate 2 was reverted to beta on July 22, 2025, with 1047 Games promising to overhaul progression, add more portal walls, simplify monetization practices, and shift the focus to classic arena modes. However, the company has resorted to significant cost-cutting measures, including 45 layoffs and shutting down the original Splitgate servers in August 2025 in a move that Proulx justified by stating that it would save “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in maintenance costs.
Splitgate 2 was met with a rocky debut on June 6, 2025. The game’s concurrent player count on Steam dropped from a peak of 25,785 to a mere 1,839 by late July, which is a 93% drop, according to SteamDB.
1047 Games landed itself in a new controversy when CEO Ian Prolux appeared at the Summer Game Fest wearing a hat with the words “Make FPS Great Again.” This action alienated a portion of the fanbase, for which Ian Proulx later apologized, saying, “We saw it as a meme,” but admitted that the backlash was far greater than anticipated.
Furthermore, the game launched with a ludicrous $145 microtransaction cosmetic bundle, no ranked mode, which led to Mixed reviews on Steam, with 61.14% positive reviews out of the total 18,978 reviews.
For now, 1047 games is relying on community-driven playtests to reshape Splitgate 2, but most of the fan base is of the view that the damage has been done. The relaunch will undoubtedly be an uphill battle as the studio attempts to recapture community trust and the charm of the original game.
