Sony's shiny new Xperia 5 IV received a significant discount on Amazon and Best Buy recently. While it is an excellent smartphone for its US$800 discounted price, those looking to save a buck can get its immediate predecessor, the Xperia 5 III, for US$645 on Amazon. It is one of the few smartphones with a 3.5 mm audio jack and an in-build DAC for all your audiophile needs.
A cursory glance at both phones' spec sheets reveals minimal differences, at least in the camera section. Both phones pack three 12 MP sensors at the back, but the Xperia 5 III has to make do with an 8 MP selfie camera, whereas the Xperia 5 IV uses a slightly better 12 MP module. Everything else is mostly identical across both SKUs, except for battery capacity and wireless charging ability.
Under the hood, the Sony Xperia 5 III uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. It may be a tad dated now, especially with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 out and about, but it is no slouch and can easily perform day-to-day tasks with relative ease. Our in-depth Sony Xperia 5 III review praised the smartphone for its impeccable 6.1-inch OLED display and stellar optics, although it does tend to get a little toasty under heavy loads.
