A new leak claims that the upcoming Sony A7C II compact mirrorless camera will see a somewhat unexpected price increase over its predecessor. The A7C II is pitched to be as capable as the full-sized A7 IV with some obvious downsides coming from the compact form factor. The 61-MP A7C R will allegedly launch at a whopping €3,699 in Europe.

Sony is rumoured to be launching both an update to the A7C — the A7C II — and a new, higher-resolution version of the same camera in the form of the A7C R by the end of August. As per usual, the rumour mill is ablaze with details of the new cameras, including leaked images of the A7C II. Now, SonyAlphaRumors claims a trusted source has provided details about the pricing and performance of the A7C II and the brand new A7C R.

According to an anonymous US-based source who claims to have hands-on experience with the camera, the A7C II body will cost “a couple of hundred dollars less” than the current Sony A7 IV, putting it below the US$2,398 mark. A European source claims the A7C II will cost €2,399 (~US$2,608 converted), suggesting US pricing of around US$2,000 to US$2,200, given the 5-10% price difference between Sony's US and EU pricing.

The A7C II is also supposed to be as capable as the A7 IV in most regards, but with better autofocus and new AI tools at its disposal. Other shortcomings of the compact camera come from its smaller EVF, lack of a second card slot, and the presence of a Micro HDMI port instead of a full-sized one.

The rest of the A7C II's leaked specifications point to the same 33-MP full-frame sensor found in the A7 IV with both a BIONZ XR and AI processor, five-axis in-body image stabilisation, and 759 AF points. The addition of 10-bit, 4K 60 fps video with S-Cinetone set the A7C II up to be a very capable hybrid travel or vlogging camera.

As for the A7C II's compact high-resolution sibling, not all that much is known about the A7C R, other than the 61-MP sensor. This new leak also purports that the A7C R will launch at an eye-watering €3,699 (~US$4,020 converted) with a hand grip. Sony is expected to launch both of the new compact cameras on August 29, 2023.
