SnowPod: Desktop 3D printer brings selective laser melting to compact metal parts

The SnowPod can print metals
Desktop metal 3D printing is edging closer to the mainstream. The upcoming SnowPod uses Selective Laser Melting (SLM) to produce high-load components - bringing a technology long restricted to industrial setups directly to the workbench.

While consumer 3D printers have become increasingly affordable, structural utility remains a core bottleneck: standard plastics simply lack the tensile strength required for high-stress mechanical parts. While systems like the FibreSeeker 3 tackle this limitation using continuous carbon fiber reinforcement, the upcoming SnowPod takes a different route by printing directly in metal.

From a user experience standpoint, the SnowPod operates much like a conventional desktop 3D printer—a workflow we plan to evaluate firsthand at Formnext in Frankfurt—yet its underlying hardware is fundamentally different. The printer relies on metal powder and Selective Laser Melting (SLM), using a 200-watt fiber laser to fuse metal particles layer by layer. SnowX specifies print speeds of up to 800 mm/s, a tight 40 µm laser spot size, and variable layer heights between 30 and 60 µm.

Naturally, bringing SLM to a desktop footprint introduces key trade-offs. The build chamber measures just 80 x 80 x 100 mm—substantially smaller than the typical ~250 mm x 250 mm x 250 mm build volumes found on consumer FDM machines. To maintain process safety and material integrity, the system relies on nitrogen shielding gas (which can be supplied via the optional NitroPod generator), an enclosed powder management workflow, and dual HEPA filtration.

SnowX plans to launch the SnowPod via a crowdfunding campaign with a starting price of $5,299. Early VIP reservations drop the entry price to $4,999, while bundles including the NitroPod nitrogen generator start at $5,599.
