While open-ear earphones have been getting increasingly common, Shokz retains its position as the brand that not only kickstarted the trend with their bone-conduction drivers, but continues to offer some of the best devices in the category. The OpenRun Pro 2, launched last year, are their flagship model for runners and fitness enthusiasts, and in the orange colour are discounted to $125, down from $180.
The upgraded version introduced a new hybrid driver setup, consisting of both bone conduction and air-conduction drivers, which Shokz calls DualPitch technology. It covers the frequency range more effectively than just the bone-conduction driver, which struggles in the lower frequencies, and also reduces the physical vibrations at louder volumes.
Designed primarily as workout headphones, they are lightweight at just 30 grams, and offer dust, sweat and water resistance with an IP55 rating. Shokz also claims that a new AI noise reduction algorithm improves the microphone performance in challenging situations.
The battery life is 12 hours, and the headphones can be charged directly via USB-C, rather than requiring a proprietary magnetic charging cable.
Although both the OpenRun and OpenRun Pro models have stayed at or near the top of many reviewers' recommendation lists in this category, they do face competition from rivals like the everyday-oriented Sony LinkBuds Open earbuds and Bose Ultra Open earbuds, and the sportier Soundcore AeroFit Pro and Suunto Wing. It's worth noting that none of these have a dual-driver setup—while the first three contain air-conduction drivers, the Suunto uses bone-conduction.
