Samsung SDI wins Mercedes‑Benz battery contract to power upcoming electric SUVs and coupes

Samsung SDI will supply high-performance nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries to Mercedes-Benz. The first-ever EV deal between the two companies will see the batteries feature in new electric vehicles, including SUVs and coupes.
The NCM batteries promise extended driving ranges, thanks to their higher energy densities. They are also expected to last longer in service, with improved safety features enabled by Samsung SDI’s proprietary technology.
The EV battery supply contract was signed in Seoul, South Korea, with Samsung SDI CEO Choi Joo-Sun and Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius in attendance.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDI and Mercedes-Benz are collaborating on more than just battery supply. The two companies have also agreed to jointly develop next-generation batteries and to cooperate in other e-mobility areas.
Mercedes-Benz, however, is not putting all its eggs in one basket. According to the Yonhap News Agency, the German automaker also met with other South Korea-based EV battery makers, including LG Energy Solution. However, Mercedes-Benz and LG have done business together on displays and batteries. In October 2025, the latter agreed to send lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs to Germany.
