The Samsung Galaxy A8 is made of glass, like many 2018 mid-range phones. Its rear is curved, which makes it feel good in the hand, but the front is mostly flat. You don’t get the dramatic curve of the Galaxy S9. It’s a more affordable Galaxy S9 alternative, but you’ll find better value at the price.

Other than that, other features worth mentioning that it sports an IP68 water and dust resistant grade, Samsung Pay (MST + NFC), a digital video stabilizer and Bixby assist (no dedicated Bixby button, though). We'll try not to make a huge deal out of it, but we can't overlook it either - Samsung's discovered the right spot for a fingerprint reader on the back of a phone. The high off-center placement on the Galaxy S8 and Note8 this year has been universally hated and we're glad that with the A8 (2018) Samsung's starting the year on the right track. Perhaps the S9 will follow suit.

The Samsung Galaxy A8 was launched in December 2017, and was released in January 2018. It comes in four distinct colors, which are orchid gray, black, gold, and blue. It is designed with smooth curves for the benefit of an easy and ergonomic grasp. It has a sleek exterior of a glass front and back, lined with aluminum frame, measuring at 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 mm, with a weight of 172 g and has a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh standard battery capacity. Its operating system is the Android 7.1.1 (Nougat). The Samsung Galaxy A8 uses a 1.6 GHz octa-core CPU, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM. The storage capacity can be expanded with a microSD card by up to 256 GB. The connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and FM radio. It comes with a reversible USB-2.0 type-C 1.0 connector. Moreover, it supports single SIM for nano SIM or dual SIM for a nano-SIM, dual stand-by. The Samsung Galaxy A8 is known to have the quality of the first dual front facing camera with a resolution of 16 MP (F.19) and 8 MP (F1.9), thus, enhancing the background scenes to exude vivid colors with sharp clarity. The dual front camera also offers a Live Focus mode, which clouds the background to provide focus when pictures of selfies or wefies are being taken. The selfies and wefies are also complimented with the Beauty effect, Food mode, or Filters that the dual front camera provides to beautify the pictures taken. Customization is also enabled with interesting stickers utilizing face-recognition technology and filters. The Samsung Galaxy A8’s rear camera provides a low-light feature with an F1.7 lens with a larger 1.12 pixels and a bigger 1/2.8” sensor. This captures the light from the background to enable the clarity of the photos to be sharp.

It comes with a super AMOLED Infinity Display with and aspect ratio of 18.5:9 and Full HD resolution (1,080 x 2,220 pixels). This means, like the Galaxy S8, it offers a large display with a broad horizontal outlook that stretches from each side. This is the biggest display for a Samsung Galaxy A phone to date. The Infinity Display is longer as well, compared to the screen of its predecessor. This enables reading and browsing to be done, with much less scrolling. In addition, the display supports multi-touch and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The 2018 Samsung Galaxy A8 is IP68-certified for protection against dust and is resistant to water, although protection against heavy rain and heavy splashes is not supported. The 2018 A8 is a strong addition to the Galaxy lineup but for its price point, it faces many competitors from Chinese phone makers such as Huawei and Oppo. Its only plus point might be its AMOLED display and the IP certification.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) is the successor of the Galaxy A5 (2017). It might be confusing that the A8 follows the A5, but Samsung has changed its naming convention. The number denotes the physical size of the A5, but it shows that the A8 is the 8th phone generation if the S and Note series serve as guidance. It looks very similar to the Galaxy S8 flagship phone, but inside it is a mid-range phone. “A Galaxy S8 Mini in all but name”, says www.trustedreviews.com and in the opinion of www.gsmarena.com, Samsung might have created an excellent “S8 lite” model if the price is right.

Design and Connectivity

The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) features an aluminum frame, and a glass front and back. It is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance. Visually, the A8 resembles the S8. The Galaxy A8 is thicker and heavier than the S8, but has a smaller screen. www.trustedreviews.com compares the phone to the similarly big iPhone 8, which has a noticeably smaller screen. In their opinion, the slightly rounded finish makes it comfortable to hold in one hand. www.phonearena.com compares the A8 to the Galaxy S8. They think that the A8’s bigger bezels, ruin the impression of a true edge-to-edge, futuristic design and mention that Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 is used and the glass back is not as slippery as many aluminum phones, but attracts fingerprints easily.

The phone has a USB-C port for charging and a headphone jack. It has 4G LTE connectivity and supports many bands. Hence, you might get good LTE connection almost everywhere. It supports dual SIM. Thanks to a dedicated microSD card slot it can use two SIMs and a microSD card at the same time. Other connectivity options include GPS, dual-channel Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as support for NFC and Samsung Pay.

Sensors

The fingerprint sensor conveniently sits under the main camera, which is an improvement compared to previous Samsung phones in www.gsmarena.com’s opinion. Moreover, they report that the fingerprint sensor is always-on, fast and very accurate. www.trustedreviews.com also mentions the terrible position of the fingerprint scanner in the S8 and S8+. Their reviewer writes that the A8’s fingerprint reader is far easier to hit and complains that it is a tad on the small size and has an odd shape. In contrast to www.gsmarena.com, www.phonearena.com complains about the fingerprint reader being not fast, “The fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S8 was a bit slow to react, and this one, too, is not as fast as on other phones like the Google Pixel 5 or OnePlus 5/5T.”

Apart from the fingerprint reader, the phone features an accelerometer, a barometer, a gyro sensor a geomagnetic sensor, a hall sensor, a proximity sensor, and an RGB light sensor. Biometric authentication is possible via fingerprint scanner and face recognition.

Cameras

The front camera consists of two sensors, 8 MP f/1.9 and 16 MP f/1.9. www.gsmarena.com praises its image quality. They write that while the front camera does not support auto focus, it comes with a features called Live Focus, which allows variable defocusing of the background before or after the shot has been taken. www.trustedreviews.com reports that camera on the front lets you take those silky, bokeh-rich snaps that blur the background. They say that the Live Focus worked well. www.phonearena.com finds that the A8 and the S8 do not differ hugely in daylight photos, but the S8 performs much better in night-time photos.

The rear camera features a resolution of 16 MP, PDAF (phase detection auto focus), and an f/1.7 aperture. www.gsmarena.com writes that the resolution is the same as the predecessor’s, but the lens are brighter and the camera lacks optical image stabilization. They evaluate, “Image quality is quite good, with low noise and minimal signs of noise reduction” and mention vivid colors, nice low-light photos, and quite good panoramas with lots of detail, low-noise, good dynamic range, even exposure, and no stitching traces.

Videos are recorded at up to up to 1080p/30fps. 4K is not supported. According to www.gsmarena.com the FullHD video output is good, with nice levels of detail and low noise and colors are rendered quite well too.

Display

The 5.6-inch AMOLED display is sightly curved. It features an 18.5:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1,080 x 2,220 pixels, which is slightly lower than the S8’s 1440p. This gives a pixel density of 441 ppi. According to www.gsmarena.com, it is one of the phone’s biggest treats. Although the A8 and the S8 are similar in size, the A8's display is 0.2 inch smaller than S8’s 5.8-inch display. “The image is sharp, there is no visible pixelization whatsoever, and the Diamond PenTile pattern of the matrix is invisible to the naked eye.“, evaluates www.gsmarena.com. They report a maximum brightness of 390 nits in manual mode and 590 nits in auto mode and praise the phone’s sunlight legibility and color accuracy.

www.phonearena.com praises the specification and performance of the screen, too. They mention good outdoor capabilities, but worse color representations than on the S8 and recommend configuring the Always-on Display feature carefully, since it requires energy.

Software and Performance

The Galaxy A8 (2018) runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat (no Oreo yet) with the Samsung Experience skin (version 8.5) on top. In www.gsmarena.com’s opinion, the Nougat OS with the latest Samsung Experience is easy to use, fast, and straightforward. They say that the interface is quite powerful if you like to customize and tweak a variety of settings and recommend that you should check out the A8’s rich theme support via Samsung's own Theme Store. Bixby is ready to assist you, but it does not have its own dedicated button. www.phonearena.com finds that the Samsung Experience user interface looks good, but does not perform good enough. They experienced a tiny bit of stutter, which is definitely noticeable when compared to a Google Pixel or a OnePlus. According to Samsung’s specification the Galaxy A8 (2018) uses their own Exynos 7885 octa-core processor (2.2 GHz Dual + 1.6 GHz Hexa) processor, 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. The storage capacity can be expanded by up to 256 GB via the dedicated microSD slot. The upper mid-range processor is much slower than the Snapdragon 835, but faster than typical mid-range chips like the Snapdragon 625. Thanks to modern 14 nm LPP FinFET manufacturing process, it does not consume much power.

A dual-core Mali-G71 (MP2) GPU is responsible for graphics. www.gsmarena.com writes that you could experience a CPU performance boost if you are coming from a J7 or A7, but that the gaming performance has not improved since the pixel count bump ate the extra power. Nevertheless, the A8 was perfectly capable of handling all popular titles they had tried. According to www.trustedreviews.com the system will be powerful enough to play games and carry out the usual day-to-day tasks. www.phonearena.com evaluates, “This is not a phone for die-hard gamers and those who will push the limits of a phone performance”.

Battery Life

The Galaxy A8 (2018) comes with a 3,000mAh battery. www.gsmarena.com reports the following test results: 17 hours in their looping video test, about 11:30 in web-surfing over Wi-Fi, close to a full day in voice calls. According to this on-line magazine, the phone achieved an overall Endurance rating of 92 hours thanks to frugal standby consumption. They kept the Always-On Display turned off for their standby test, since it was turned off by default. www.phonearena.com reports, “We did not have any problems getting through a full day, even a longer one, but this is definitely not a phone that will get you through 2 days”. Moreover, they say that a fast charger is included, which ensures 100 % charge in 1 hour and 37 minutes.

Sound

www.gsmarena.com has tested the 3.5 mm jack with an external amplifier and headphones and reports, “Audio output is nicely clean”. According to them headphones will bring some not easily audible intermodulation distortion (which you don't hear easily anyway) and dropped the loudness to just above average, but they describe the headphones output as some of the cleanest. The single speaker is positioned on the right frame above the power button. www.gsmarena.com praises its rich and deep sound output and that it is quite loud. www.phonearena.com praises the call quality on the Galaxy A8 2018. They find that the caller’s voice sounds natural in the earpiece and sound is of sufficient quality and loud enough.

Summary

The Galaxy A8 (2018) is quite pricey at launch time for a mid-range phone. Advantages are its Super-AMOLED display, great battery life, processor and image quality of the cameras for the class. Cons are lack of 4K video recording, the mediocre GPU and no Oreo OS at launch.

The nearly one-year old flagship Galaxy S8 is the better phone and does not cost much more. Last year’s Galaxy A7 (2017) might also be an alternative. It is cheaper and features a regular 5.7" AMOLED screen, and a similar chip. The OnePlus 5T offers a similar AMOLED screen, a much faster processor and graphics, and dual-cam on the back for about the same price.

www.phonearena.com summarizes, “The Galaxy A8 is a phone selling at the same price as the OnePlus 5T, but it does not quite feel as well executed and it definitely feels overpriced.”

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.
