Those on the lookout for a relatively affordable gaming laptop should definitely have the Asus TUF series on their radar. Specifically, the TUF A16 is a solid performer with very respectable specifications, including a 16-core Ryzen 9 7940HX CPU and an RTX 4070 GPU. Thanks to an ongoing, limited-time sale on Amazon, the laptop can now be had for its lowest price ever at 'just' $1,399.
The TUF A16's Ryzen 9 7940HX 'Dragon Range' CPU paired with 16 GB of DDR5 memory allows for incredible multi-core performance, effortlessly crushing Intel's offerings such as the i9-14900HX, thanks to the former's 16 cores, 32 threads, and a max boost clock of 5.2 GHz (single-core). Single-core performance, on the other hand, is decent but won't be enough to defeat some of the laptop's Intel-powered counterparts.
The RTX 4070 performs as expected, and slightly outpaces other laptops with the same GPU, such as the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i and Asus Zephyrus M16 in synthetics. The system manages decent framerates in demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 even at high settings, although certain games like Hogwarts Legacy could benefit from extra memory.
As for thermal performance, the TUF A16's fans do ramp up and get loud in max fan mode (59 dB). The laptop's thermal system does an admirable job for the most part, even though the CPU occasionally hits its throttling point at 95 degrees C, which somewhat affects peak performance.
The TUF A16's display is nothing to write home about when it comes to color accuracy, but the 2560 x 1600 165 Hz panel delivers a decent gaming experience. The webcam and speakers are also mediocre at best, but that hardly undermines the laptop's excellent value as a performant, mid-range gaming laptop.
