IFA 2013 | Roundup of Samsung's Unpacked 2013 Episode 2

Samsung kicked off IFA in high gear with their Unpacked 2013 Episode 2 event, where the Galaxy Gear, Note 3 and Note 10.1 were all unveiled.

Samsung had a very busy yesterday here at Berlin, debuting three new devices before IFA even opened its doors. The company managed to update some of the old by refreshing their Note 3 and Note 10.1 tablets, but they also set the stage for the smartwatch takeover with their Galaxy Gear.

For starters, the new Galaxy Note 3 is now 5.68" in size but still manages a smaller and lighter profile than its predecessor. The device also has improved performance and battery life, and the back is now furnished from a leather surface, giving it a higher quality look and feel.

Samsung will be making the device available in two models, just like the S4, with the 3G version packing an Exynos 5420 octa-core processor, and the LTE model featuring a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. The larger AMOLED display now comes in at a 1920x1080 pixel resolution, and responds to improved inputs via the S-pen stylus. Other technical improvements include 3GB of RAM, a 13MP camera with 1080p/60FPS/4K video capabilities, HCRI LED flash and UHQA ultra-high quality audio.

The Note 3 wasn't the only phablet refreshed by Samsung though, as the "2014 edition" of the Note 10.1 found its way onstage as well. The device comes with a pair of processor options just like the Note 3, along with a 10.1" 2560x1600 pixel display, 64GB of storage and KNOX security protection.

Of course, the main course yesterday was the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which should usher in a new era of "smart" accessories. The watch currently works in conjunction with the Note 3 and Note 10.1, but future updates should add compatibility for the Note 2 as well as the Galaxy S3 and S4. The smartwatch is operated through a 1.63" 320x320 Super-AMOLED touchscreen, but voice commands are supported as well. Besides time telling and notifications, the Gear can also take quick videos using a 1.9MP camera and microphone that are built into the wristband.

With regards to launch, both the Note 3 and Galaxy Gear will become available on September 25th, while the Note 10.1 is holding out till sometime in October. Till then, make sure to check out our plentiful photos and hands-on video, all embedded below.
