The Ricoh GR IV packs a massive APS-C sensor into a compact camera small enough to fit in your pocket. Ricoh has now announced a brand-new GR IVx, which combines this sensor with a new lens, giving customers a choice of two focal lengths.

The Ricoh GR series is a true standout in the camera market, as Ricoh has managed to pack an APS-C sensor and a high-quality lens into a body measuring just 10.9 x 6.1 x 3.27 centimeters, allowing the camera to fit into a standard pants pocket. By comparison, the Fujifilm X100 VI, which uses a sensor of the same size, measures 12.8 x 7.5 x 5.5 centimeters.

While the Ricoh GR IV was previously available exclusively with an 18.3 mm f/2.8 lens, which achieves a 35 mm equivalent focal length of 28 mm, the Ricoh GR IVx will soon add another option, a 26.1 mm f/2.8 lens, thereby achieving a 40 mm equivalent focal length. Weighing 265 grams including the battery and memory card, the new model is only 3 grams heavier than the 28 mm version. The lens has been improved compared to the Ricoh GR IIIx, as Ricoh has adopted a more complex design with eight elements in six groups, including three aspherical elements.

The rest of the features are the same as those of the Ricoh GR IV. The camera therefore continues to offer a 25.6 MP APS-C sensor with five-axis image stabilization and a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 204,800. The camera can record 4K video at 30 fps and take macro shots from a distance of 0.12 meters. Although Ricoh has included a 3-inch touchscreen, it has omitted a built-in flash or viewfinder to save space.

Pricing and availability

The Ricoh GR IVx is expected to hit the market in winter 2026. The list price has not yet been confirmed, but the camera is likely to be similarly priced to the standard Ricoh GR IV ($1,599 on Amazon). Production of the older Ricoh GR IIIx is expected to be discontinued in October 2026.
