After years of radio silence, rare footage from In the Valley of Gods has surfaced, and it has rekindled discussion around Campo Santo’s (the creators of Firewatch) highly anticipated title. The six-second clip, shared by Valve developer Matthew Wilde via @gabefollower on X/Twitter, does an impressive job of showcasing the game’s stunning water physics. In the visuals, realistic reflections and lighting come through brilliantly as the player character moves forward through a serene, sunlit cave as they follow who's supposed to be Rashida, the game's protagonist.
Originally announced in 2017, the game gripped players with its promise of an adventure set in 1920s Egypt. However, development was shelved after Campo Santo was acquired by Valve in 2018. The team shifted focus to other Valve projects, such as Half-Life: Alyx and Counter-Strike 2, which left fans in some sort of limbo.
This new clip is a small reminder of the technical ambition behind In the Valley of Gods. It also reignited the frustration of fans who have waited months for updates. While most users were awed by the 6-second clip, some were pretty disappointed too, with users lamenting over the game's indefinite hiatus.
As of now, In the Valley of Gods’ Steam page lists a tentative release date of December 2029, nearly five years from now. The game still remains on many wishlists - hopefully, Valve keeps updating its fan base regarding future updates.
