Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship processor is projected to be on the market in the form of new smartphones by 2023. However, those who would like it in something more like a reference platform for purely AI applications are in luck. The OEM will also offer the SoC as part of a new Innovators Development Kit to academic and research entities.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 might be Qualcomm's latest top-end SoC that might grace next-gen mobile devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra; however, the OEM also asserts that it is also a powerful and highly efficient AI platform in its own right, unveiled in conjunction with new technologies such as Snapdragon Smart for advanced features such as "faster natural language processing with multi-language translation and revolutionary INT4 support" as it has just been.

To this end, Qualcomm has also come up with the Innovators Development Kit, a hardware platform based on the 8 Gen 2 and with "support for a new community of developers". The OEM believes that it will eliminate a number of steps in making the latest AI applications or research compatible with its technology, as the Kit will also give the researchers and engineers working on them access to its in-house AI Stack out of the box.

Relevant university and IT departments or groups can apply for their own Innovators Development Kit via Qualcomm's website from now. Meanwhile, the first 8 Gen 2-powered smartphones are thought to be jockeying to be first to launch now that their SoC has been announced.
