Apple has more or less phased out its iPod brand, once a stable of its hardware business. Nonetheless, concept renders have shown how Apple could utilise the Watch Series as a portable music player with a click wheel.

The iPod Classic and iPod mini may be long dead, but someone has reimagined it using an Apple Watch Series 4. Sadly, these are only concept renders, but they do provide a look at what Apple could do with its popular smartwatch series if it had a bit more of an imaginative streak.

The so-called Pod Case is exactly that, a case for an Apple Watch. Seemingly made from silicon, the Pod case has openings on its front, back and side for the display, charging mechanism and digital crown. While the Watch Series 4 has a small display by contemporary standards, the one in the 40 mm model is just 0.1-inches smaller than the 1.67-inch screen in the iPod mini. Moreover, the 44 mm Watch Series 4 has a 1.73-inch display, albeit in a different aspect ratio than the 1.67-inch one that the iPod mini has.

Even so, we love how portable the Pod Case looks, and think that it would be useful if you just want to listen to music when out and about. Using an LTE version would provide the Pod Case with even greater functionality too, including allowing the quasi-iPod to make and receive calls. Presumably, the lower half of the Pod Case would house a battery too, which should give the Watch Series 4's runtimes a bit of a boost.

It is unclear how the click wheel would work, but the Pod Case would not require Apple to modify the UI of watchOS. Ultimately, we would like to see Apple release something like this, and not just for nostalgia. It would make the Watch Series more versatile, in our opinion, although not as a smartwatch.
