BlackBerry has been hoping that the new BlackBerry 10 OS will remedy their ailing sales, but one device won't be so lucky. The company today confirmed that their PlayBook tablet will be left out from the BB10 faily, and will not be receiving the next-gen update.
During the company's quarterly earnings call, CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed the news, stating that the PlayBook would not receive BB10 since the level of performance and user experience were unsatisfactory. The company's only tablet will still be supported on existing platforms, but it is unclear whether that includes continued development and OS updates.
While the news is sure to devastate users who stuck around hoping for BB10, it also likely spells doom for the device. The earnings call did reveal 100,00 units shipped this past quarter, but users aren't likely to lust after a 2-year old device. In addition, no new PlayBooks appear to be in development, and this could be the end of BlackBerry's tablet experiment.
