Andy Rubin’s Essential entered the smartphone market with the PH-1 back in 2017. The PH-1 was something of a flop, sales-wise, which ensured that the company didn’t follow it up with a PH-2 last year. While most have given up hope of ever getting a successor to the PH-1, new reports are making it look increasingly possible that Essential could be set to deliver yet another attempt at a flagship phone.
According to the source, Essential filed a patent for an-display selfie camera back in 2017 and that is a technology that could be seen on the PH-2. “Could” being the key word here, as it’s also possible nothing ever comes from it. This will not be the first time an in-display selfie camera has been mentioned in conjunction with the PH-2. A few weeks ago, purported schematics of the device leaked, showing it with an in-display selfie camera.
That said, a patent is just that: a patent; and most never materialize into something concrete. It would be nice to get an Essential PH-2, though, and one featuring innovative technology like an in-display selfie camera would be even more welcome.
