Elon Musk just accused Apple of anti-competitive partnership with OpenAI, threatening immediate legal action against Apple through xAI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was quick to react, noting it was a case of the kettle calling the pot black.

Elon Musk just made a post on his X account at about 1 AM UTC, accusing Apple of — without any doubt — violating the antitrust laws in its partnership. He said Apple is behaving in a manner which makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to clinch the number one spot on App Store.

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, quoted the tweet just about 2 hours later, countering Musk's allegations. He said it was a “remarkable” allegation, given that Elon Musk himself has been accused of altering X's ranking algorithms to favor him and his companies.

He also shared a media article published in 2023 by Platformer, which alleged Elon Musk forced X engineers to rebuild the ranking algorithms in his favor. A tweak which they said pushed Elon Musk's tweets to the top of X users' timelines.

The article claims that this action was prompted by Musk's frustration over his Super Bowl tweet receiving less engagement than one from President Joe Biden. After threatening to fire his engineers, they created a new system to “greenlight” all of Musk's tweets. This new algorithm essentially applied a “power user multiplier” of 1,000 to his account, which automatically boosted his tweets to rank higher than anyone else's and caused his posts to flood users' feeds.
