Open-source eGPU dock brings expanded desktop GPU support to Asus ROG XG Mobile
A hardware hacker known as Osy on GitHub has designed a solution to use any desktop GPU with the Asus ROG XG Mobile interface. This proprietary interface is on par with OCuLink, with support for data transfer speed of up to 64 Gbps, faster than USB4 or Thunderbolt 4.
However, Asus only offers a few options, and the 2023 dock with Nvidia RTX 4090 laptop GPU costs $2,000. The solution by Osy, on the other hand, allows users to install any desktop graphics card. This means you can get an eGPU setup with compatible Asus devices, such as ROG Ally, for much less than $2,000 (Asus Dual RTX 4070 curr. $569.99 on Amazon).
Worth noting that you will get PCIe 3.0 x8 support with the ROG Flow laptops, while the ROG Ally offers PCIe 3.0 x4 connectivity. As for the open-source eGPU dock, it's a PCB that replaces the mainboard found in the Asus XG Station Pro Thunderbolt 3 eGPU dock.
But it's possible to make it work with other enclosures, and you can even 3D print an enclosure on your own. Osy has shared all the instructions on GitHub, which also includes a parts guide. You can also read the technical details in Osy's Reddit post.
