Enhancements coming soon to Meshtastic’s public server
For those unfamiliar with Meshtastic or LoRa radio devices, Meshtastic is an open-source project that utilizes LoRa, or long-range radios to create an off-grid communication platform that does not rely on existing infrastructure. The ESP32 is among the more popular options for building a LoRa radio and can be used as an accessory to a smartphone or as a standalone device.
The public MQTT server bridges Meshtastic networks over the internet and can expand networks that may otherwise have too few devices to communicate over longer distances. The first upgrade will introduce a quality-of-life improvement with a “Zero-Hop Policy” that keeps MQTT tests from populating your local network Mesh. Additionally, optimizations will be made to focus on the important traffic channels such as TextMessageApp, PositionApp, and RoutingApp. Together the updates will enhance messaging, event performance, and will not require a firmware update.
