Neon Abyss, one of the most popular roguelikes in recent years, is now cheaper than ever on Steam. The fast-paced action platformer is discounted by 80% for the first time, bringing the price down to under $4. The deal runs until December 18.

At the heart of Neon Abyss is the “Grim Squad,” a special task force sent by Hades to take on the so-called “New Gods” in a neon-soaked underworld. The story mostly takes a back seat, as the real focus is on fast-paced platforming and classic twin-stick shooting. The game’s upgrade system is wide open, allowing you to stack items without limit – leading to both ridiculous and ridiculously powerful builds. Along the way, you also collect upgradeable pets and encounter mini-games that add surprise twists mid-run. As with any good roguelike, death means starting over from scratch.

Neon Abyss features procedurally generated dungeons, ensuring that every run feels fresh and unpredictable. With each attempt, the world evolves – unlocking new rules, bosses and even alternative endings over time. The game also stands out visually, thanks to its vibrant neon aesthetic paired with a pulsing electro soundtrack, giving it a distinct identity. This bold presentation particularly stood out in the German review by PC Games.

The magazine also praised Neon Abyss for its fun roguelike gameplay, the wide range of weapons, items and companions, and its strong long-term appeal. However, not everything was perfect. The editors pointed to the occasionally frustrating RNG elements – if you do not get the right item combos or lack a key for a crucial door, a restart can feel unavoidable. The somewhat repetitive enemy and level design also led to point deductions.

In the end, PC Games gave Neon Abyss a solid 7 out of 10. Gamespew, on the other hand, was far more enthusiastic, calling it “one of the best roguelikes of recent years.” On Metacritic, the game holds a metascore of 74 and a slightly lower user score of 6.5 – largely due to frustration with the RNG mechanics. The game fares best on Steam, where 86% of over 23,000 user reviews are positive.

80% off on Steam for the first time

Neon Abyss was developed by Chinese studio Veewo Games and released in July 2020 in partnership with publisher Team17. Normally priced at around $20 on Steam, the roguelike platformer is currently discounted by 80%, bringing it down to just under $4 until December 18. According to SteamDB, this is the lowest price the game has ever seen. Neon Abyss is also marked as "Verified" for the Steam Deck (currently listed at $440 on Amazon), meaning it runs smoothly on the handheld without any issues.
