Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, has announced he will step down to make way for his deputy, Joel Kaplan, to take over.
Before joining Meta, Clegg served as the UK's deputy prime minister and was the leader of the Liberal Democrats party. Joey Kaplan, his successor, joined Meta in 2011 to oversee US public policy. Kaplan previously worked in the administration of former US President George W. Bush.
Clegg announced his departure with a Facebook post, saying this was "the right time" to move on. He called his tenure "an adventure of a lifetime!" and acknowledged the "significant scrutiny and controversy" that Meta has faced during his time.
"I am proud of the work I have been able to do leading and supporting teams across the company to ensure continued innovation can go hand in hand with increased transparency and accountability, and with new forms of governance," wrote Clegg.
Many see the move as Meta mending bridges with President-Elect Donald Trump, who will take office this month. Trump was banned on Facebook and Instagram in 2021 following the Capitol riots. Meta unbanned Trump's accounts in 2023.
