Wedellink has unveiled a new USB hub at Computex Taipei. The TC630 features a small display that’s integrated into the chassis, which measures approximately 4.3 x 2.4 inches. It provides information which can be particularly useful for troubleshooting, especially when connecting displays. Typically, it's not immediately clear if data is flowing through a cable, especially if the screen remains black.
For monitors that are connected via HDMI, the display shows both the resolution and refresh rate. For USB devices, it provides information such as the USB version and the power (voltage and amperage) that the hub provides to the laptop. The hub's temperature is also displayed.
Technically, the hub supports up to 100 watts via USB Power Delivery. However, the USB ports are limited to 5Gbps, which means that high-end hardware will be throttled. Connectivity-wise, the hub offers two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports. Monitors can be connected via HDMI and can run at a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels at 60Hz.
At Computex, the manufacturer briefly demonstrated a working prototype. A display wasn't connected in this case, but the USB hub was briefly hooked up to a smartphone. The display was relatively dim but easily readable.
According to Wedellink, the tools for producing the chassis should be ready to go next month. Initial samples are expected to follow in June. These will be sent to customers who may offer the new USB hub under their own brand. Wedellink itself will only act as a white-label manufacturer, and the company was not yet able to provide an eventual retail price. However, a double-digit price is expected, which means the hub will be positioned in the lower to mid-price range. For reference, the Dockcase hub is priced at $180, which is considerably more expensive, but that gadget does feature a touchscreen and can even accommodate an SSD.
The release date of the new TC630 depends on when Wedellink will find suitable distributors for different markets.
