Dockcase: New USB hub boasts a touchscreen, an M.2 slot and support for 4K content at 120Hz
Dockcase is probably no longer a completely unknown figure. The company now has a new product in the pipeline: a USB docking solution with a more premium design and superior specs. The model is marketed as a 7-in-1 solution, functioning not just as a dock but also as external storage.
The device can accommodate an M.2 2230 or M.2 2242 SSD. Inside, the storage drive is connected via PCIe and NVMe, allowing for generally faster data transfer with a modern protocol. Data transfer is carried out over two PCIe 3.0 lanes offering a bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s. Whilst not extremely fast relative to high-performance external SSDs, the transfer speed is still fairly high on its own.
Weighing 113 g (0.25 lb) and measuring 97.8 x 55.0 x 20.9 mm (3.9 x 2.2 x 0.8 in), the product boasts a 1.9-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 170 pixels. Apart from displaying information, such as SSD details, it can be used for adjusting the built-in cooling fan. A read-only mode is available to help users better safeguard the data on their SSD.
Furthermore, the dock accepts memory cards and features a HDMI 2.1 port capable of 4K output at 120Hz. It connects to a computer via USB-C but only supports a maximum output of 100 watts over Power Delivery. With a list price of $179, the Dockcase Smart USB-C Hub 7in1 will launch on Kickstarter soon – likely with discounts as is usual on the crowdfunding platform.
