Motorola tipped to release four new Edge smartphones in 2021
According to two reports, Motorola is planning to freshen up its Edge smartphone series. Writing on Twitter, Evan Blass shared a spreadsheet that contained lines for four models; Edge Sierra, Edge Berlin, Edge Berlin NA and Edge Kyoto. Apparently, these devices will arrive in FY2021, but Blass has not provided any other details about their release dates.
TechnikNews claims to have corroborated Blass' tweet with its sources and has provided camera details for the Motorola Edge Kyoto. Apparently, this device will have three rear-facing cameras, with a Samsung ISOCELL HM2 (S5KHM2) serving as its primary sensor. Currently, Xiaomi equips the Redmi K40 Pro+ (Mi 11i), Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and Mi Mix Fold with the HM2, while Motorola uses it in the Moto G60.
Motorola will complement this 108 MP camera with an ISOCELL 4H7 (S5K4H7), an 8 MP sensor that the Kyoto will use as an ultra-wide-angle camera. Incidentally, Sony uses the ISOCELL 4H7 as a front-facing camera in many of its recent Xperia smartphones, including the Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II. Only the Meizu 17 uses the sensor as an ultra-wide-angle camera, though.
TechnikNews believes that the Kyoto will feature an OmniVision OV02B1B 2 MP sensor too, the same one that the Edge S has. Additionally, the Edge Kyoto will have either a 16 MP OV16A1Q or a 32 MP OV32B for its front-facing camera.
Supposedly, the Edge Kyoto will be the cheapest of Motorola's upcoming Edge smartphones, with the Edge Berlin and Edge Sierra the successors to last year's Edge and Edge Plus, respectively. It is unclear where the Edge Berlin NA fits into this, although it may simply be a North American edition of the Edge Berlin.
