Motorola fans, preheat your ovens. Android 9.0 Pie might be coming to your device.
Bad puns aside, Motorola released a list of devices that will be receiving an update to Android 9.0 Pie earlier today. This list includes most flagships from last year and this year’s Moto G line. The full list is below:
Curiously absent are Motorola’s more popular phones, namely the Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus, Moto E4, and Moto E4 Plus. That’s a shame, as these handsets proved to be very popular last year. The Moto E4 line debuted last year with Android 7.1 Oreo, giving some hope that Motorola would keep the budget handsets up to date over the next year at least. Sadly, that may not be the case.
That said, their exclusion from this list does not necessarily mean that those handsets will never see the light of Pie. Motorola could indeed update the phones in the future; this devices in this list are just the handsets the company currently plans to update.
There’s one last caveat: timing. Motorola (like most OEMs) is being blithe on the timeframe for the update, merely stating that Pie will be pushed to these handsets “starting this fall.” Motorola hasn’t had the best track record with timely updates, so forgive us for not holding our breaths. Pie should be coming to these phones eventually; hopefully, the company doesn’t leave the update in the oven too long.
