The Simpsons: Hit and Run, released in 2003, has built a cult following over the years with numerous overhaul mods regularly breathing new life into the now two-decade-old title released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC.
The game, developed by Radical Entertainment, drew inspiration from Grand Theft Auto III, as evidenced by its mission-based driving, semi-open-world exploration of Springfield, and classic satirical humor and quips from The Simpsons.
The Simpsons: Hit and Run, despite being a game adaptation based on the show, garnered widespread surprise and a fan following that continues into 2025. The game earned an 80 on Metacritic. However, due to ongoing rights complications, we never received a sequel to The Simpsons: Hit and Run, or a re-release for that matter, on modern hardware.
That’s where the passionate modding community steps into the forefront to keep the legacy of The Simpsons: Hit and Run alive. The latest developments come from Slurm Team, a nine-member group of volunteer developers who announced their project back on July 12, 2019, and have now released a demo for Futurama: Hit and Run. Futurama: Hit and Run is a total conversion mod that transplants the entire Hit and Run experience into Matt Groening’s sci-fi universe.
The game is available for free download on the Donut Team’s Mod Bakery website, but requires a legitimate PC copy of the original game plus the Lucas’ Simpsons: Hit and Run Mod Launcher to install the game.
The mod transforms Springfield into a meticulously faithful recreation of New New York in the year 3000, complete with pneumatic tubes, mutant-filled sewers, and detailed 3D models built entirely from scratch by Slurm Team.
The demo currently boasts four story missions, one bonus mission, a full custom soundtrack including the beloved Futurama theme, and exactly ten side gags, and one of them is supposedly hidden in the demo.
The demo reveal on October 17 quickly garnered virality online, even catching the attention of a senior game designer on the original Hit and Run, Joe McGinn. In the YouTube comments, he stated, “As the lead designer of the original game. I can only say… this looks awesome! I want to play it.”
